MWDX: WEGP Presque Isle 1390 kHz, Maine, HUGE signal copied in Oxford UK!

Hi there, the signal from Presque Isle is certainly one of the less difficult TA catches on MW. However, I've never copied them like this before - and note the audio bandwidth filter: 7.6 kHz. Quite exceptional. I always pay tribute to the equipment, which is superb, but this must have also been down to exceptional conditions of propagation.

Hi there, this is my strongest/ clearest reception of WLAM and the second time I've caught them in 2018. Never one of the often heard TA stations, so always nice to copy them with audio.

Hi there, this is the second time I've copied WTNI in 2018 and nice to hear them with such a (relatively) strong signal and ID. Still amazes me what's possible with MW DX. Just look at the superb catches recently from David (tvdxrools) and Matthias (senderjaeger).

Hi there, it's been two years since I last copied Radio Pilipinas on this frequency - and that was with the ELAD FDM DUO. Prior to that I'd heard them on my venerable Sony ICF-SW55 and a 95 metre longwire. Nice to copy them again, albeit with quite a weak signal.

Antena Satelor 153 kHz on LW induction loop: Sony ICF-SW55 and Tecsun PL...

Hi there, here's a bit of fun - comparing the modern PL-310ET with and without the LW induction loop on 153 kHz Antenna Satelor, against the ancient, but high quality Sony ICF-SW55. As might be expected, the Sony was more sensitive on LW than it's modern DSP counterpart - the signal from Brasov could be copied without the loop. The Tecsun couldn't deliver any audio without the loop, but it was perfectly acceptable with. Just goes to show that if you want decent reception on LW, buy an old non-DSP radio or build a loop - which is more fun I think. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, here's a big signal from WWKB closely coupled to an even bigger signal on the adjacent channel, just 1 kHz displaced. Despite this challenging condition, the Elad on LSB pulls out remarkably clear recovered audio. Brilliant stuff.

Comparing the SDRPlay RSP1A with the XHDATA D-808 receiver on a MW induc...

Hi there, following a very short debate on my channel regarding how well an SDR (without an internal ferrite antenna) compares with a portable reciever when coupled to an induction loop, I decided to carry out a quick test. In my limited experience, all of my portables are peforming better than my RSP1A SDR and I assume that's because they benefit from an enhancement of performance from the existing ferrite antenna. The RSP1A donesn't have this advantage and so , with a signal you might copy with a portable, utilising inductive coupling, you might not necessarily hear it at all on an SDR, using a pick-up loop. In this instance I've used the transatlantic MW signal from VOCM in St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Their signal can be clearly heard on the portable, but only a trace of a carrier on the RSP1A. Let me know your views.

MW DX: Harbour Light of the Windwards 1400 kHz, Carriacou, Grenada

Medium wave DX: Radio Progresso 890 kHz, Chambas, Cuba, copied in the woods

Hi there, this is presumed, but Radio Progresso with a TX power of 200 kW is certainly the most likely Spanish-speaking candidate on this fequency. If I'm correct, then this is only the second time I've copied them and thus the trip to the woods was definitely worthwhile.

VOCM 590 kHz St John's Newfoundland and Labrador, almost booming indoors...

Hi there, this is actually the first time I've ever copied VOCM on a portable and certainly the first time I've copied them with an antenna indoors. The power of the induction loop I suppose - and my goodness does it make a difference. This signal from VOCM on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean can, at times, power into my QRH, but that's with the Elad and Wellbrook combination - over £1000 of equipment. Here is an equally good signal with a £60 portable receiver, a £20 variable capacitor and some wire I had lying around.

KCBS Pyongyang 2850 kHz copied with the XHDATA D-808 and a longwire

Hi there, this is mostly static, but if you click on 1:52 into the video you will hear another burst (if that's the right word lol for such a weak signal) of the usual style of music they broadcast. It's shame propagation wasn't working in my favour a little more, but nevertheless, a great catch on this budget radio and 5 quid worth of wire.

Hi there, here's a signal from Radio Difusora Roraima out in the woods which compares well with my recent excellent reception indoors on the Icom IC-R75. Obviously the SNR on this reception is superior in this electrically quiet environment, but it does also demonstrate how well the Icom performs from the shack with the Wellbrook ALA1530 under the noise.

MW DX: CFRB Newstalk 1010 Toronto 1010 kHz, copied in Oxford UK

Hi there, here's another transatlantic MW DX catch on the wonderful Icom IC-R75. Newstalk 1010 Toronto is often one of the strongest transatlantic signals, but nearly always suffers from adjacent channel QRM. This is often fairly straight forward to mitigate with an SDR, more difficult with a traditional rig, but the Icom in SSB with passband delivers a better result than just about any of my other non-SDR receivers.

Hi there, copying transatlantic MW DX is made much easier with an SDR because you can see what's going on lol and you have almost limitless filtering and signal conditioning options. Tricker on a boat anchor..you've got to have more of a feel for what's going on and actually use your ears ha ha. Anyway, that's me rattling on too much already. Visually characterising the bandwidth and response of my LW induction lo...

One of my subscribers Bryan Louis suggested I use an SDR to take a visual look at the bandwidth of my LW induction loop. A very good idea and here are the results. What's interesting is the lower end of the bandwidth which is just below the bottom of the band is very clearly defined with the dual gangs fully meshed. At the upper bandwidth limit with the gangs fully open, the capacitance of my hand contributes to the overall capacitance of the loop and thus the upper limit is slightly more difficult to ascertain. Nevertheless, a very worthwhile and interesting experiment. Thanks for watching.

How to build a LW induction loop that will seriously improve the perform...

Hi there, here's a video describing how I built my LW induction loop. None of the details are critical, but it's worth following a design and then adjusting the number of turns, based on the bandwidth upper and lower limits. Here's what I used and other details:

Box dimensions: 40 xm x 34 cm
Standard equipment wire
Number of turns: 47
Tuning capacitor: dual gang: 10 to 360 pF + 10 to 360 pF

Upper resonance limit: c.600 kHz
Lower resonance limit: 134 kHz

Note: the tuning capacitor must be wired up to engage both sets of plates. You can do this my simply shorting out both lugs on either side of the body - it doesn't matter which two. The loop is wired on one side to either of the lugs also and on the other side to the capacitor body.

Hi there, here's another example of the performance of the LW induction loop, this time with the Eton Satellit (also quite deaf on LW, although my example has previously been demonstrated to be slightly more sensitive than others). Anyway, once again, the enhancement provided by the loop has boosted a signal that is barely audible to perfectly clear for listening. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, as owners will know by now, the XHDATA has superb sensitivity on medium wave and shortwave, with the telescopic and on a large antenna, but is, unfortunately, rather deaf on longwave. This is true of most DSP portables. So, here's a huge enhancement of the signal from Europe 1 using my simple-to-build induction loop. It improves the signal from barely audible, to perfectly listenable. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, this was a quite amazing enhancement to the performance of the rather-deaf-on-longwave XHDATA D-808 portable receiver. The LW induction loop really does boost the sensitivity to the point where the (usually) stronger of the two Icelandic signals on LW can actually be heard. Selectivity is an issue where with powerful signals adjacent on both sides of this channel. The 1.8 kHz audio bandwidth filter on this radio still delivers remarkably clear audio. It's a steal at £60.

Hi there, the XHDATA D-808 is a superb receiver on MW and SW, but slightly deaf on LW! Here's the enhancement of the signal from Radio Antena Satelor - one of my favourites - with my LW induction loop. A massive boost to the signal from a very simply antenna. Thanks for watching.
