DXing at home with a magnetic loop and Sangean ATS-909x: Radio Mosoj Cha...

Hi there, here's my recording of Radio Mosoj Chaski on the 90 metre tropical band, using the 909x, for comparison with the Tecsun S-8800. There seems to be more background noise on this recording, but the recovered audio is slightly clearer. Always a weak signal at home, even with a magnetic loop, it was nevertheless great to copy this station on portables. As always, your views welcomed.

DXing at home with a magnetic loop and Tecsun S-8800: Radio Mosoj Chaski...

Hi there, Radio Mosoj Chaski has been rarely heard at home in the shack these past months, so it was great to copy their signal in June with two portables and the ALA1530 magnetic loop. Overall, the audio seems a bit crisper on the 909x, but there's also more noise apparent on that recording. Here, with the S-8800, the audio, to my ears at least, is a little 'muddier'. As always, your views appreciated.

DXing at home with a magnetic loop and Sangean ATS-909x: Radio Verdad 40...

Hi there, here's the same signal as copied on the Tecsun S-8800, on the 909x. If anything, the signal is clearer here, but that could be down to my hearing lol. Either way, for a receiver with a question mark over sensitivity on the whip, it certainly produces with a good external antenna. Great result for the best looking portable ever made??!!

Hi there, this is the first time I'd copied Radio Verdad on my 'loaned' S-8800. Nice to have the option to sit in the living room rather than my tip of a shack and tune around the tropical band, hearing some nice DX. Just goes to show how affective a magnetic loop such as the ALA1530 is in conditions of poor local QRM. The next video follows with the same antenna set-up and signal, except the radio is my Sangean ATS-909x.

Hi there, here's a decent copy of WLAM from Lewiston, Maine with an ID for confirmation. I hear this signal usually 3 or 4 times a year and this was the last time. I expect the next time to be well into the North American season, but you never know - last year I copied a lot of summertime signals from across the pond.

Take-off from Zurich Airport and views of the surrounding area

Hi there, following a brief visit to Zurich on Business and some rather limited DXing due to severe nopise pollution at my hotel, we took off last Friday afternoon, heading back to Luton. Here is the take-off and some nice views of Zurich and the surrounding area.

Hi there, according to Google Maps, this station in Felsburg is only 255 km from Zurich, but even with the benefit of much closer proximity, I didn't notice a discernibly stronger signal from that which I'm used to hearing in the UK. Quite the opposite actually. Such a noisy environmenta at my hotel, I was pleased to hear anything!

BBC Radio 4 198 kHz kHz as heard in Zurich, Switzerland on XHDATA D-808

Hi there, in Genoa last year I couldn't hear Radio at all on Longwave. I remember at the time feeling quite disappointed lol. This time around I'm in closer proximity to the transmitter - about 942 kms according to Google Maps. The timing was good on this recording with an obvious copy of our National Anthem at 00:58 hrs BST. Still a lot of noise and a weak signal, but nevertheless, nice to hear the BBC on LW from central Europe.

Hi there, here's a rarely copied signal from Radio Voz Missionaria using the MegaDipol. Last heard in my shack in July 2016, on this frequency, it's much more usual to copy this station out on a DXpedition, taking advantage of a very low noise-floor to offset a weak carrier and low modulation. This is a great result at home with the active dipole, particularly considering it's actually an E-field antenna. Bonito/NTL have done a super job and I have to say that right now, it's performance is close to my Wellbrook magnetic loop.

RTL 234 kHz Luxembourg, as heard in Zurich, Switzerland on XHDATA D-808

The distance from Zurich to the transmitter site in Luxembourg is 309 km, much closer than the 570 km to my QTH in the UK. Despite all the electrical noise in my hotel, the signal was perfectly readable, but nowhere near as strong as I'm used to hearing from the UK.

Hi there, back in the UK I only ever copy RTÉ Radio 1 on this frequency, although it's sometimes possible to hear Algeria in the background. My hotel room in Zurich was soooooo noisy, it was impossible to listen to anything of interest on shortwave. I did copy North Korea on 15245 kHz, but there was so much electrical hum going on, it wasn't pleasant. I turned my attention to LW and here is a decent signal from Algeria, with no sign of anthing from Ireland. It's just interesting to check out what can be heard from another part of Europe. CHUM TX with 50 kW and this is a relatively strong signal so that stacks up, however, it is almost swamped by adjacent channel QRM and I didn't catch an actual ID. Hi there, here is a station that I hear at home in the shack, with recovered audio a couple of times a year. That's it. Out on a DXpedition they can be heard more often, but however you look at it, this is a difficult signal to copy in Europe and isn't reported very much. With this compact set-up using the Bonito NTL MegActive MA305 antenna, it's all the more pleasing. Out of local QRM, the MA305 is SUPERB. S32 is the most difficult to catch in my neck of the woods - pun intended lol - and this time a really nice signal. As I said in my previous video description, this little antenna is superb and the S-8800 is a proper DXing radio. Testing the SDRPlay RSPduo: Radio Verdad 4055 kHz LSB Guatemala, copied ...

Hi there, Radio Verdad in Guatemala is a station that I can copy surprisingly often and with an advertised TX power of only 1 kW, this is rather surprising. One thing it doesn't suffer from is adjacent channel QRM generated by other radio stations. However, there is usually a 'lump' of digital noise which fortunately doesn't vary in bandwidth and thus LSB reception is always possible when the carrier is observed with modulation. This is another very nice result for the SDRPlay RSPduo which continues to demonstrate super performance on HF.

Testing the Bonito NTL MegaDipol MD300DX active antenna: Radio Guinée 96...

Hi there, Dennis at Bonito supplied me with a KiwiSDR networked receiver which now installed at my QTH allows his technical team to check the performance as I experiment with the configuration of the radiating elements, orientation etc. Here is a pretty decent signal from Radio Guinée and having checked back through all my recordings of this station, this is actually the first time I've recorded their signal from home. Radio Guinée is a station that can be quite easily copied away from home on a decent portable, even with a telescopic antenna - as demonstrated by my recent copy with the brilliant XHDATA D-808. Their TX power is reasonable at 50 kW, however, modulation is definitely lower than it should be, thus at home, with a higher noise floor, recovered audio is usually obliterated. Here, therefore, is my first copy from home with decent recovered audio. Saying that, the KiwiSDR is not the strongest receiver in terms of audio quality through my Macbook Pro, however, the intrinsic noise-floor is superb at around -140 dB. As for the MegaDipol itself, after some experimentation, I now have the antenna arranged such that excellent catches on HF are possible, along with transatlantic MW DX. With an even higher Gain than my Wellbrook, on a DXpedition, somewhere quiet, this antenna should outperform it by some margin.

Hi there, Dennis Walter of Bonito asked me to spend some time experimenting with the new MegaDipol MD300DX active antenna at my QTH. This has proven to be a very rigorous test because as many of you know, I suffer from a lot of local QRM, including the dreaded PLT-generated noise. However, after much experimentation and local/ remote testing via a KiwiSDR, we have converged on a set-up with an excellent noise floor across the MW band and HF. Thus, out of season, here's a decent copy of WFME Family Radio New York, recieved this morning at 02:43 hrs UTC, using the excellent SDRPlay RSPduo receiver - also under test!

Hi there, here's another out of season transatlantic MW signal, this time from WWKB Buffalo, New York. The MegaDipol was certainly proving it's worth this morning with some nice transatlantic DX coming in, rather unexpectedly I might add as the MW band had been mostly clear of carriers until around 2:30 am local time, 1:30 am UTC. Hi there, how odd than I've never copied any transatlantic signal on 580 kHz previously. Well actually perhaps not that odd as there are only a couple of 50 kW transmitters on this channel and everything else is 5 kW or below and thus much more difficult to hear. I can't hear an ID, so this is presumed. The other most likely candidate is WTCM Traverse City, Michigan. If you have any local knowledge etc. I'd be very pleased to hear from you!

Hi there, here is an excellent signal from Aparecida, Brazil. Recent reports they are now TXing with 25 kW, but nevertheless, at home under the electrosmog, a very difficult catch. I've only copied them with a good enough signal to record once in 2018, so that says it all really. Here is a clear signal - and note I'm using USB mode to catch the exact frequency. Once again, the S-8800 coupled to the Bonito MegActive MA305 antenna do a superb job...and it beats stringing out a 50 or 100 metre longwire in the dark lol.

Hi there, this is the first video in a series, with catches from a late night DXpedition using the Tecsun S-8800 receiver and the Bonito MegActive MA305 antenna. A compact set-up that can be used just about anywhere and ready to go in a couple of minutes. Here's a decent copy of the 1 kW signal from Toronto and bear in mind it takes an excellent receiver and antenna to copy this station. More to come.

SDRPlay RSPduo: Radio Sonder Grense 3320 kHz swamped by QRM on random wi...

Hi there, this signal from Radio Sonder Gense, Meyerton, South Africa is weak but discernible via the Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop. Via my old random wire antenna, the noise-floor is so high ( -85 dBm versus -110 dBm for the Wellbrook) that there is no sign of the carrier. This wire used to be the mainstay of my DXing activities two or three years ago. The local QRM has increased considerably during that time. Magnetic loop is the only way to go and the RSPduo does a superb job in identifying in real time, just how good the loop is.

Hi there, great to copy this low power Danish station with the SDRPlay RSPduo. This is actually a PF for me which is great - something that does't happen very much these days on shortwave.

Recorded on 30/05/18 using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
