Radio stickers and memorabilia sent to me by a DXer friend in Brazil

Hi there, a friend of mine in Brazil and fellow radio hobbyist very kindly sent me a large number of radio stickers and some keyrings through the post, all of which arrived last week. Certainly very unexpected and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him very much. I won't name him, just in case he would rather remain annonymous, but of course he can comment here if he so wishes.

Some very interesting articles and I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching!

Medium Wave DX: WWKB Buffalo New York 1520 kHz copied in Oxford UK

Hi there, here's a copy of WWKB in New York, which despite the usual terrible adjacent channel QRM is still audible, thanks to the Elad's superb selectivity.

Reach Beyond Australia (HCJB) 9610 kHz copied in Oxford UK with JRC NRD-525

Hi tihere, a pretty decent signal from Kununurra given that this was recorded at 13:16 on a Saturday amidst the local QRM. I am learning the love the 525...it's tricky to use - well fiddly perhaps I should say, but the performance is simply superb. I look for time to get in front of it and have a listen! I haven't copied these guys since April, so very nice to hear them again last weekend.

Recorded on 20/10/18 using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna, outdoors. Thanks for watching.

MWDX: WEGP Presque Isle 1390 kHz, Maine, first copy since March, with ID

Hi there, WEGP is one of those transatlantic stations that is usually not present on my spectrum, but every now and they just appear with a decent signal. Here they are again after 10 months. Always a pleasure to hear them in the shack.

Hi there, here's a nice signal from Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland that turns into a very nice signal as the video progresses. This is one of the more regularly heard stations from the other side of the Atlantic, but hey, I never get tired of copying DX from over there!

FT8 QSO with Cuban operator completed in 30 seconds with 10 Watts TX power

Hi there, this probably doesn't make for very interesting watching, but I felt it necessary to record what was at the time my longest distance FT8 QSO using 10 Watts TX power with a Yaesu FT-991 and SE-X80 wideband vertical antenna.

Thanks for watching.

Hi there, it's always a pleasure to copy the Voice of Korea on any receiver, in any location. Great to hear them on a Friday afternoon in the office, using the brilliant SDRPlay RSPDUO coupled to my Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop. The audio is via a Bose SoundLink Mini 2 speaker, via some DSP processing that I can't talk about right now lol.

Hi there, just to prove it wasn't a fluke lol, here's another signal from North Korea, copied in the office last Friday afternoon. The ALA1530 makes this possible. Even indoors, it's awsome.

Radio Rebelde 1620 kHz, Guanabacoa, Cuba, copied in Oxford UK with JRC N...

Hi there, almost exactly a month ago I copied this station in the shack using the Icom IC-R75 - and the same antenna. It always feels like more of an achievement copying TA DX on MW with a non-SDR receiver. Interesting to compare the performance of this classic with the more modern R75.....I feel a test coming on lol. 73! Clint

Medium wave DX: CJYQ 930 kHz, St. John's, Newfoundland, copied in Oxford...

Hi there, after hearing nothing since the Spring, the presence of CJYQ on my MW spectrum tells me that the North American season is coming. Often dominated by adjacent channel QRM, this is a station that is usually difficult to hear well, but on occasion can be copied with a portable and an induction loop. IDs are few and far between, but the pop music they play is the give-away.

FT8 decodes using the SDRPlay RSPDUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop...

Hi there, I've been constantly amazed at how far my 5W and 10W signals on FT8 have propagated and successfully decoded. Thus far my signal via the SE-X80 wideband vertical have been heard/decoded in New Zealand and Tasmania. Not bad going lol.

Here one evening after work, I started WSJT-X and GridTracker and watched the signals coming into Oxford with my Wellbrook loop indoors, near a window. Quite amazing to see what I presume are low-power signals from the USA being decoded. That presumption might be incorrect of course as I read somewhere that one North American operator sometimes uses 400 Watts TX power on FT8!! Maybe that should read WTF!!!!

Thanks for watching.

This sounds like KKLF 'Banda 13 Radio' 1700 kHz, Richardson, Texas...

I'm not sure what happened, but two of my videos got mixed up lol. Thanks to Matthias for spotting this.

I last copied Banda 13 Radio when I was in Treasure Island, Florida, earlier this year. Prior to that reception, I had only copied them once previously in the UK - back in April. Here they are again - I think! It certainly sounds right, but I can't make out a definitive ID.

Hi there, I was only thinking a couple of weeks ago that I hadn't copied CFRB on 1010 kHz from Toronto in a long time. Upon checking, I found that it was actually March of this year that I last recorded their signal. Great to hear them again as they're usually one of the most consistently heard transatlantic stations heard at my QTH during the winter months.

Great music on Rádio Clube do Pará 4885 kHz, Belém, Brazil copied with ...

Hi there, I'm feeling rather spoiled by the quality of DX the NRD-525 is delivering to my shack. This signal from Rádio Clube do Pará is more akin to what I would expect out on a DXpedition in the early hours, with either an active antenna, or longwire of significant length. The reception is so good, it's actually possible to enjoy the content rather than the usual - 'wow that's cool, I can actually hear that signal from Belém' !!!

Hi there, so here's a thing...I haven't copied radio Fana at home on any radio for 18 months - and on a non-SDR at home for 3 years. I didn't realise this until I checked after making this recording. Hearing this station has primarily been achieved on a DXpedition, so I was really happy to copy them on the rather brilliant JRC NRD-525.

Hi there, this is only the second time I've copied WRKO Boston, the first being in January of this year. That time the ID was faint, this time the ID is much clearer. Once again the Elad FDM DUO/ Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop combining very well to produce the DX goods!

Hi there, clarity such as this is rarely demonstrated using any equipment at home. Despite the fact that the signal from Bonavista Bay on MW can be one of the most consistently heard TA transmissions, a lot of this recording is quite special. A really great receiver for sure.

Hi there, here's a booming signal from Saudi Arabia on the 19 metre broadcast band, with super audio from the NRD-525. I was waiting around that day for night to fall for some serious DXing, but I simply couldn't even wait until mid afternoon local time, so I found myself having a tune around, at lunchtime.

Completely brilliant receiver - and of course the MegaLoop FX has also proved it's worth at my very noisy QTH.

Spirit Radio 549 kHz County Monoghan Ireland, copied in Oxford, UK

Hi there, I can't quite believe it, but this is only the second time I've copied Spirit Radio, the first being in December 2015 with the Yaesu FRG-8800. Great to finally copy them again - and thanks to Tom Brogan for the inspiration from his own video.

Radio Verdad 4055 kHz, Guatemala, copied in Oxford UK on the JRC NRD-525

Hi there, having copied this difficult-to-hear station in September with the Icom IC-R75, I though I'd have a go with the NRD-525. It took a few days of monitoring, but eventually there was the signal from Guatemala - and probably clearer than I'd ever heard them at home in the shack. Once again - and I know it's getting boring - but the NRD-525 is simply a superb receiver.

Hi there, the Yaesu FRG-7700 continues to prove it's worth as a MW DX machine. The narrow and medium audio filters provide an excellent balance of audio fidelity and adjacent noise cut-off. Also a great receiver on LW....my favourite band lol with a bit of Iceland thrown in!

Medium Wave DX: CKAC 730 kHz Montreal, Quebec copied in Oxford UK

Hi there, I managed to copy this station in June, which is rare, other than that, I hadn't heard them since the depths of winter. Very nice to copy them again before the autumn is up! The adjacent channel noise from 729 kHz is always a problem, but the Elad is has superb selectivity and signal conditioning options.

Medium wave DX: CJYQ 930 kHz, St. John's, copied in Oxford, UK

Hi there, at the right time of year and when conditions of propagation are right, this station can be copied on a portable with an induction box loop in the living room. Low cost DXing article in October edition of Radio User magazine

Hi there here's my latest article for Radio User magazine, on the benefits of low cost DXing. Many of us have shacks full of expensice, sophisticated equipment that cost £1000s...but I know only too well from my own experience that the best results are almost always obtained with a good, relatively cheap portable (in comparison to the kit in my shack) and a reel of wire, out in the woods. My article explains what you can expect to hear, based on how much money you need to spend on a portable receiver. I hope you enjoy it.

The reality of operating the FT8 digital mode on 5 Watts TX power

Hi there, I've been operating with the narrow band FT8 digital mode for a couple of weeks now. I keep hearing that you can 'work the world' on a few Watts. That's not really true - well not thus far with my set-up. My Elad puts out a maxium TX power of 5 Watts, so my ERP is a bit less than that. Some would argue that my SE-X80 wideband vertical antenna is a bit of a compromise, but it's the sort of antenna that those of use with limited space have to work with. What's interesting is that my signal is being decoded all over the world, but it's a very different story in terms of making QSOs. This video tells the story, so far.

Thanks for watching.

Radio Verdad 4055 kHz, Guatemala, copied in Oxford UK on the Icom IC-R75

Hi there, always a difficult target at home - weak signal, often poor modulation and a big pile lol of adjacent digitial noise. Radio Sonder Grense 3320 kHz, Meyerton South Africa copied on Yaesu FRG-...

Hi there, it's been over a year since I copied this station on the FRG-7700...this time around a stronger, clearer signal. With my Elad tied up on FT8 TX, I've come to the conclusion that this receiver's forte is actually MW DXing. I remember a long time ago Matthias telling me this - and now that I've spent more time with it, he's absolutely right. The narrow audio filter suitably cuts out adjacent noise on MW, whilst still retaining decent audio fideltiy. More on that to come in future videos.
