Hi there, a relatively weak, but discernible signal from Peru. Fascinating to compare these two receivers given they are based on the same DSP chip. Which won? Let me know. This is the first time I've copied Radio Tarma's signal properly in the UK since last summer. A welcome catch.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 28/01/18 around 22:54 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is only the second time I've copied WEEI, Boston. The first was back in September 2017, so a very welcome catch of this rather rare visitor to my MW spectrum.
Recorded on 05/01/18 at 02:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop, outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is the first in a series of reception videos, comparing the performance of the newly introduced (and excellent) XHDATA D-808 portable receiver against what I believe is essentially the same DSP hardware - but otherwise known as the (brilliant) Eton Satellit. Interesting to note that I haven't copied this signal since a year last summer, but I know from this month's edition of Shortwave Bulletin that others have in the past few days. Overall, what a result for the £60 XHDTA?!
One thing to mention; the audio on the Eton is more powerful than the D-808, but this test is really about comparing signal-to-noise. So, don't do what I used to do and let that sway you lol.

Hi there, this is a Spanish speaking UNID. Given that Radio Progresso TX on this frequency at 200 kW, I presume this is reception of their signal. Of course, it could be something even more exotic, but I think chances of that are slim. Anyone with local knowledge, who can confirm this signal, please come forward!
Recorded on 20/12/17 at 01:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop (outdoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is actually partially my fault. I bought this radio off eBay and when it arrived in the original box, minus some of the proper packing and a manual, I simply loaded it with D Cell batteries and got on with it. Little did I know there was already a single battery stuck inside and had probably been there for years - well I know it's been there for more than a year because I've owned this radio since before last Christmas. I should have downloaded a copy of the manual and read it first lol. Anyway, I only discovered the problem when a couple of nights ago I switched on - and zilch. All the other three batteries measured at just above 1.5V, so they were all fine. Suspecting corrosion or a loose wire, I took the receiver apart to discover a rather messy battery compartment and a sorry looking Duracell Plus D cell which has clearly been leaking for a long while. What's really annoying though (apart from my stupidity lol) is that the previous owner who sold me this receiver must have known a battery was stuck inside and yet he simply sold it to me anyway. Oh well, you live and learn.
Hi there, I was pleased to finally copy KDKA again after almost exactly a year. There is a clear mention of Pittsburgh in the recording (when I say clear - I don't mean CLEAR lol I mean discernible!)...but you get my drift!
Recorded on 05/01/18 at 02:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, a strong signal from one of the North American powerhouse stations which slowly fades away. The RSP1A continues to impress, with 95% of the performance of a top-end SDR for about 1/10th of the price. Superb.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 13/01/18 at 02:14 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is often one of the most difficult transatlantic signals to hear - of those that can be heard. Usually QRM is the main issue, but relative signal strength (as compared to Toronto on 1010 kHz for example) is also an issue. Thus, it was very pleasing indeed to copy this station again, doubly so with the modestly priced, but brilliantly performing RSP1A.
Recorded on 13/01/18 at 01:56 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, now that I'm a radio ham, I've been looking for ways to set up an HF rig with a decent antenna in a relatively small garden. Here is a design for a very straightforward Inverted L antenna, constructed from cheap parts that can be quite easily assembled in a day. The tuneable whip antenna I purchased for HF doesn't really work in a built up area and requires a superb ground plane that I can't easily provide.
Kudos and thanks to Len Paget GM0ONX for the excellent article featuring this design (Practical Wireless February 2004) Thanks for watching.
Hi there, Radio Nacional Angola is nearly always difficult to copy at home in the shack with any modulation, so a good initial test for the RSP1A on shortwave. Despite fairly poor propagation, there is some clear recovered audio, so a good job.
Recorded on 18/01/18 at 00:28 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, one of the more difficult Canadian catches - that can actually be heard - and so the RSP1A certainly demonstrates it's DXing credentials by delivering some decent recovered audio.
Recorded on 13/01/18 at 01:52 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is a very clean signal from Radio Hargeysa, Somaliland. Often plagued with signals from Radio Hams - although perhaps I shouldn't use the phrase plagued as I am now a radio ham myself lol, I was fortunate enough to catch their signal without any co/adjacent channel QRM. What a brilliant little radio.
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 19:51 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I had a very quick tune around for something interesting at work the other day and lo and behold , a signal from Lusaka, Zambia on my tiny yet brilliant Sony ICF-SW100 receiver, with about 10 metres of wire attached to the telescopic and the other end hanging out of the window. Note the very clear ID towards the end of the video.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 20/01/18 at 14:58 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, it's funny how you don't ever hear a station for two years and then you copy it two of three times in quick succession. Here's my last recording of this long distance MW signal and what a great job once again with the Elad/ Wellbrook combination.
Recorded on 21/12/17 at 04:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, another nice signal on the D-808, this time from Addia Ababa, Ethiopia. It would appear that my suspicions this radio is actually an Eton Satellit in diguise have been confirmed. Which means this is one seriously brilliant radio for very modest money.
I highly recommend!
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:26 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, it was great to have Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation back on air a month or so ago. Here is their rather strong signal, copied on the superb little XHDATA D-808 receiver. Such a great radio for a very modest outlay, I'm very much looking forward to the next DXpedition!
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:20 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I've copied YVKS many times in the past few months, but here's a late signal and on the SDRplay RSP1A. A super catch and proof that you don't have to spend 100s of £££ on a supposedly 'high end' SDR receiver to catch something really special.
Recorded on 18/01/18 at 00:35 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, I'm hearing WFAN a lot, as are others it would seem. Here's their signal on the fabulous RSP1A.....a lot of SDR for very little money...IMHO.
Recorded on 13/01/18 at 01:44 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, Angola is a tricky recieve on a portable receiver due to their off-frequency TX. However, pretty clear, discernible audio was possible with the D-808 in SSB mode. A bit of adjustment required, but overall very pleasing to hear this signal on a £60 receiver.
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:03 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, for whatever reason, it's quite rare that I copy Médi 1 with a decent signal at my QTH and so this reception is most untypical of what I usually hear. Again, it's always nice to hear something interesting on a non-SDR.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 12/01/18 at 01:48 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, another signal from Toronto, except this time just about booming into Oxford. There's no doubt in my mind that the RSP1A is a super receiver, with just about the same performance or an Elad or Perseus. More testing, with weak signals will confirm...but for £89.95, it's genious!
Recorded on 12/01/17 at 01:05 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, nice to catch a bit of transatlantic medium wave DX on Christmas day! Despite the usual adjacent channel QRM, the Elad's selectivity manages to mostly deliver some pretty nice audio.
Recorded on 25/12/17 at 02:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, so it's not very often I pick up a PF on shortwave from the UK and you'd think even less likely with a budget portable...but here it is. I was a little stunned when I heard and identified this signal, so I asked my friend Ivan (regionaldx) to check I was correct and he confirmed. So, there you go - hard core DX is possible with a (very good) budget receiver and a few metres of wire! You've just got to get your butt outside to make it happen lol....and believe me that wasn't easy on a cold January Sunday evening lol.
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:34 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I last copied Radio Rebelde on this frequency in September, so nice to hear them again. The ever-present QRM on 711 kHz makes this a tricky catch if you want any recovered audio. Fortunately the Elad FDM DUO has almost endless selectivity options. #brilliant.
Recorded on 20/12/12 at 03:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, the Elad/ Wellbrook combination strikes again and even when propagation conditions aren't the best, which they haven't been for some time. this set-up still pulls in Transatlantic DX.
Recorded on 20/12/12 at 01:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is only the second time I've ever copied Radio Difusora Congonhas; the first time was during a power cut during my last visit to Rio Capim. So, a very welcome catch with this brilliant little radio and great to finally hear this station from the UK. Definitely worth a punt to any DXer or SWL for the very modest price.
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:41 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, great to hear Rádio Evangelizar so clearly on this briliant, budget portable receiver. This is not an easy signal to hear at the best of times in Europe and so perhaps more so than any of my recordings published thus far, this signal demonstrates the DXing credentials of this radio.
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:38 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is a PF for me, so a very welcome catch. Once again the Elad/ Welbrook combination pulls off a transatlantic interception....it never ceases to amaze me.

Hi there, here's a lovely signal from Guinea booming into Oxford via a longwire antenna. The selectivity of the XHDATA D-808 is really excellent and what's more, even on narrow filters, the audio still sounds pretty clear - definitely less muddy than some of my other receivers. Is this a £60 Eton Satellit is different clothes? It's certainly starting to look that way!

Hi there, this is the first time I've copied Radio Nacional in Brazil since they came back on-air before Christmas. Once again a very nice result for this brilliant £60 radio. As I have already mentioned, this really does appear to be an Eton Satellit for about a quarter of the price!
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:26 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I conducted my first DXpedition with the little XHDATA D-808 reciever yesterday evening. I only had a couple of hours to spare in the early evening, but I have to say, this little £60 radio seriously delivered! Here's the first recording - Radio Aparecida, Brazil. Not an easy catch by any means, but no problems at all with this receiver and a longwire. More to come!
Recorded on 14/01/18 at 20:30 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here are my initial impressions of the XHDATA D-808 and a an overview of the main features/ controls. This receiver was recommended to me by my good friend Thomas Brogan and when the UK price reduced to around £60 just before Christmas, I decided to treat myself. Here is the unboxing and an overview of the main features etc. I read somewhere this radio utilises the same DSP receiver chip as the Eton Satellit - and a few others of course, so potentially this is an excellent receiver for the serious DXer, for very modest money.
Hi there, quite a nice signal from WFED copied a couple of nights ago with the Icom IC-R75. Always a pleasure to copy a transatlantic MW signal on a non-SDR receiver.

Hi there, I recorded the medium wave band in the early hours of this morning because there were numerous transatlantic signals to been seen/heard. In particular, WFED 1500 kHz Washington DX was booming in. I think this reception video clearly demonstrates that the SDRplay RSP1A is a superb receiver for a very modest outlay. Sensitivity and selectivity is right up there with the best - and by that I'm referring to the Elad FDM DUO and Perseus.

Hi there, this is the first time I've managed to copy Radio Caroline in the office and to be fair, it required placing the Sony by the window behind my desk. Nevertheless, the signal from the Ross Revenge could be heard pretty clearly, although with some fading.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 10/01/18 at 07:55 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, a very nice signal from the often troublesome WFED on 1500 kHz. Once again the SDRplay receiver demonstrates excellent DXing credentials for what is a very modest retail price. More to come.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 10/01/18 using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, the budget SDR receiver strikes again! Here's a very nice signal from Iceland on 207 kHz Longware with the SDRplay RSP1A receiver. It's early days and I need to check out some really difficult DX, but thus far the SDRplay is performing really well with the loop.
Recorded in Oxford on 10/01/18 at 01:20 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, firstly, my review of the Tecsun S-8800 will be published in the February edition of RadioUser magazine, so don't miss it! It's a great magazine anyway, we should all by buying it lol. They have just sent me another receiver for testing - the SDRPlay RSP1A. After having quickly downloaded the software, I copied and recorded a pretty nice signal from CFRB Toronto. So, I managed to ascertain it's transatlantic MW credentials in about 10 minutes.....an excellent start with more to come.

Hi there, I know I keep banging on about Longwave DX, but here is a really nice signal from Poland on the Icom IC-R75 during daylight hours. I love that Icom - what a radio.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/01/18 at 12:52 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors.
Hi there, a nice track, copied on Christmas Ever, here in Oxford, from CJYQ St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It's what Christmas is all about.....if you're a complete radio geek lol.
Recorded on 24/12/17 at 05:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this occurs very infrequently - almost full house of signals on the X-band from 1610 kHz to 1710 kHz. Some of these delivered recovered audio - separate recordings to come.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 21/12/17 at 05:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I was really pleased to copy Radio Hargeysa at home for the first time in 18 months. This was also the first time in 2 1/2 years that I'd copied them at home on a non-SDR receiver.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/12/17 at 18:51 hrs UTC using an Icom IC-R75 receiver and a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I don't think it's possible to properly copy 4KZ or Ozy Radio at home - the maxiumu achieveable SNR isn't going to allow enough modulation to deliver recovered audio....but, you never know! I've been monitoring 5045 and 5055 kHz over the holidays and low and behold, a carrier appeared just below 5055 kHz on the 29th of December at 19:46 hrs. This totally stacks up with 4KZ which has been copied by DXers in closer proximity to the TX site on 5054.996/997 kHz. No audio, which sort of makes this recording a bit boring lol, but I wanted to share it anyway. The carrier makes an intial appearance 00:30 seconds into the recording and then another at 01:02. I'll keep listening and no doubt at some point, venture out to the woods to try again with a portable.
Recorded using a Perseus SDR and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here, despite significant adjacent channel QRM is a nice signal from WFAN New York. Not a station that is copied very much at my QTH during year, but can be a relatively frequent visitor to my MW spectrum during the cold dark months of winter.
Recorded on 29/11/17 at 01:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is the signal from the 'Ross Revenge' on the classic Hacker Super Sovereign SW portable. This radio (with the full compliment of 'D' cells) weighs and absolute tonne, but my word the audio is superb. This isn't really the right signal to demonstrate that, but, what a fitting radio with which to copy this station!
Recorded in oxford UK on 01/01/18 at 17:15 hrs UTC, thanks for watching.
Hi there, here's a rather 'muddy' daytime signal from Topolná, with the Elaf, Perseus and Icom. Not sure which one of these pulls it off the best, but still, it was very nice to copy the Czech Republic at that time of day!
Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/12/17 at 13:36 hrs UTC, using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is a PF for me, so a welcome catch indeed, particularly with a couple of very clear IDs. I've only ever heard WADO New York on this frequency previously, so just goes to show that if you persist, good things will come!
Recorded on 20/12/17 at 02:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop outdoors. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is just about the rarest CBC Radio signal that can be heard at my QTH. Last reception was 7th of January 2017, so almost exactly 11 months ago.
Recorded on 30/11/17 at 00:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, after three visits to Brazil in the past year, of which the last two I had the brilliant Eton Satellit to accompany me, I decided it was time to make a change for my next trip in 2018. As I think I explained in another of my recent videos, travelling and DXing in South America is a privilege really and an opportunity I always want to make the most of. Therefore, I need the best possible portable radio with me. I consider the Eton and this radio to be the best on the market and so this was the only option. Whilst the SYNC on this radio is a disappointment, it's ability to handle and large antenna is a big positive and of course it's renowned to be incredibly sensitive - as many of you guys know first-hand. I'm very much looking forward to putting it through it's paces.
