SDRPlay RSPduo: random wire vs Wellbrook ALA1530 on 90 and 60 metre BC b...

Hi there, here's another comparison - a random wire on a woeful night of noise at my QTH, versus the Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop. There was only ever going to be one outcome, but how great to compare antennas simultaneously with the RSPduo's dual tuner - and to think that the random wire was my defacto DXing set up for more than 6 months.

Hi there, this signal on the 49 metre broadcast band has always been very difficult to copy at home. In fact, I last heard them from the shack in September last year. This is always going to be a weak signal, but compare the signal using the Wellbrook against my 20 metre random wire. I didn't even bother checking the lack of audio - and this is a set-up that used to be the mainstay of my DXing at home. Kudos to the RSPduo and the Wellbrook for delivering recovered audio.

Hi there, here's the other signal from Iceland on Longwave, copied with the brilliant Icom IC-R75 and the Wellbrook loop. This time around the signal on 207 kHz is about the same strength as the simultaneous transmission on 189 kHz - about S9 +20, which is unusual. Such a shame Icom pulled the plug on the R-75. Definitely a keeper!

Hi there, the Elad is mega at separating closely spaced signals and delivering recovered audio. WWKB is a perfect example and despite the usual adjacent channel QRM, a clear ID is heard at 02:02 into the recording.

SDRPlay RSPduo: North Korea booming into the office on 12015 kHz

Hi there, here's a really nice copy of of the Voice of Korea from my office at the end of the working day. I'm really liking the option to monitor two signals simultaneously, just about anywhere on the radio spectrum and of course, testing two antennas with the same signal. A great receiver that is at least as sensitive as the RSP1A on shortwave.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/05/18 at 15 27 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Icom IC-R75 on LW: RÚV Rás 1/Rás 2, Gufuskalar Iceland 189 kHz

Hi there, most of you know I have a strong affinity with longwave and having booted up the R-75 for the first time in a long time, I decided to check out the relatively weaker signals from Iceland, of which 189 kHz is nearly always weaker than 207 kHz.. Interestingly, their signal in AM mode with the narrow stock filter was clearer from adjacent channel QRM than in SSB with any filter. That doesn't happen very often. This receiver is superb, even without filter mods and solid as a rock - easily my best non-SDR. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, nice to copy North Korea's national signal on 9665 kHz. I did manage to catch this after work, but still in the office using a rather more sophisticated set up (the RSP1A and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop. However, as this video demonstrates, it's also possible to hear interesting DX with equipment of less than £100 in cost.

SDRPlay RSPduo: comparing two antennas simultaneously, in real time

Hi there, the new RSPduo makes it possible for me to not only monitor two signals at either end of the radio spectrum - from LW to 2 GHz, it also allows the direct comparison of antennas in real time, Here, using the signal from RRI on the 19 metre broadcast band, I'm comparing the Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop and the Bonito Boni Whip in my office at work. It's a bit of an unfair test because the E-field Boni Whip is not designed to operate within an electrically noisy office environment, however, it performs very well - particularly when you consider it costs less than a 1/3 of the price of a Wellbrook loop. Note that I'm still using my travel laptop, so everything is a bit squashed on the 13" screen.

A brief overview of the new SDRPlay RSPduo and the latest version of SDRuno

Hi there, I was fortunate enough to be offered the new SDRPlay RSPduo SDR receiver. The new innovation here is the twin tuner, with multiple extenal antenna options and 2 GHz of bandwidth that allow two signals to be monitored simultaneously at either end of the radio spectrum . So for example, one can copy a signal on LW and at the same time, monitor a signal on UHF. Brilliant stuff once again from SDRPlay. Many more videos to come on this one! Thanks for watching.

Hi there, I last copied this station in January, indoors actually, with the brilliant and diminutive Sony ICF-SW100. Here's a signal copied outdoors with the Sony reel antenna - just 5 metres of wire. Copying this station is always difficult due to heavy adjacent channel QRM, however, the D-808 filtering is superb and even with 1 kHz of bandwidth, discernible audio is delivered.

Hi there, this is my strongest copy of Radio Sonder Grense at home in a long time. I know it doesn't sound much lol, but usually there is little or no audio. It's usual for me to spend hours in front of my SDRs - the Elad, and RSP1A in particular and the Perseus, so for a change I fired up the R75. Definitely a keeper! By the way, hearing this station in Florida was brilliant - and lucky as my DXing time was strictly limited by the family...not an issue when I'm travelling for work!

FT8 decode using the SDRPlay RSP1A, WSJT-X and GridTracker - an overview...

Hi there, whilst in the classroom last year studying for my Ham radio license, one of the tutors (a licensed Ham of course) demonstrated digital signal decoding with a particular focus on the new FT8 standard. As he sat back in his chair with a cup of tea, his transceiver was making QSOs automatically, with other operators worldwide. I thought it was great lol so downloaded the software soon after - but couldn't make it work, so I dropped it for a while. I recently came back to it and resolved the issues, having noticed recently that others on YouTube have also been using this brilliant piece of software for RX. GridTracker is a great add-on in that it generates a graphical representation of the QSOs taking place using an interactive world map. As others have noted recently, this is an excellent tool for checking band conditions in real time. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, quite amazingly, this is my first reception of Radio Aparecida at home on the 49 metre broadcast band (with audio) since Christmas 2016. A rare catch indeed. I had to actually check their transmission with a live feed on the internet as their signal has shifted about 300 Hz since I last copied them. I recognised the Portuguese, but they were almost dead on the frequency used by Radio Santa Cruz. Fortunately other DXers have also recorded this shift in frequency.

Previously my loop would have been in the shack. These days it's lives permanently in the garden shed - and benefits from the addition of a Bonito GI300 Galvanic Isolator. Great to hear this rarely heard station again.

Hi there, despite some adjacent channel QRM on 6180 kHz, the signal from Mexico City was pretty strong in Florida with the D-808 on the whip. This was a better result than my reception with the SDRPlay and MA305 antenna at my apartment, but of course the noise at the beach was more than an order of magnitude lower most likely. Key to this reception was the amazing audio filters on the D-808, even the narrowest settings of 1.8 and 1.0 kHz provide decent audio.

Hi there, the 90m broadcast band time signal from CHU Canada, Ottawa was copied loud and clear with the XHDATA D-808 on the beach, just using the whip. A great little radio to take on a trip!

Recorded in Treasure Island, Florida on 30/04/19. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, this is a station I've copied many times from the UK and Brazil. Quite difficult to hear most of the time because of the relatively weak signal and adjacent channel QRM from Radio Santa Cruz Bolivia. Amazing to copy them from the beach with just the telescopic antenna.

Hi there, I sat on the beach from midnight until 1 am local time a couple of days ago and caught this rather exotic station, last heard in the UK on October 2017 (although copied in November from Rio Capim). Great to hear them again and a very nice catch just on the whip antenna of this totally brilliant little radio.

Hi there, this is presumed, although I think I can hear an ID - but I'm not 100% sure about it. If anyone out there can confirm, that would be great. It's been over a year since I last copied this station, so I'll be pleased if this is correct/
