Medium wave DX: 590 kHz VOCM, St. John's, incredibly clear and stable si...

Hi there, here is an incredibly clear and stable signal from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, heard in Oxford UK with an indoor set-up. I can't remember a stronger transatlantic medium wave signal, other than perhaps one or two of the 50-odd copied with the Beverage antenna. Check it out youselves and let me know what you think. Recorded on 10/01/17 at 07:27 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, I've only heard and recorded the CBC signal from Sydney, Nova Scotia once previously, back in October of 2016, so I was realluy pleased to catch them again a couple of months later. The signal is weak and fading, but the CBC hourly chime is clearly heard along with discernible audio. Recorded in Oxford UK on 10/12/16 at 02:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Office DXing with the Boni whip: Eton Satellit vs NooElec RTL-SDR: EWTN ...

Hi there, another comparison of the RTL-SDR and the Eton Satellit - my portable radio of choice these days lol. As might be expected, Eton reproduces the nicest audio, but the RTL-SDR is proving to be reasonably capable with the Boni whip antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/02/17 at 13:28 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Medium wave DX: WLAM Lewiston 1470 kHz, Maine, USA, excellent signal & ...

Hi there, this was only my second reception of WLAM, the first being
with the 200 metre Beverage, so a really pleasing result using the
Wellbrook ALA1530. Please note the very clear station ID at 00:40s into this video. Recorded in Oxford UK on 09/12/16 at 05:59 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Test #5: Zanzibar BC 11735 kHz, very cl...

Hi there, another direct comparison and once again a very close result
indeed. I can't split them if you take the Sony's bigger speak into
account. So essentially briliant performance from the Eton, still
keeping up with the legend! Don't know what you guys think but I reckon
the Eton's got this! Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 18:09 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Test #4: Shannon VOLMET 3413 kHZ USB

Hi there, the fourth in the series of videos comparing these two great
portables, this time with a target signal requiring USB. Don't know what
you guys think but I reckon the Eton's got this! Recorded in the woods
in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 18:20 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Medium wave DX: WRED 'The Big Jab' 1440 kHz, Maine, excellent reception ...

Hi there, this is my best indoor reception of WRED - in fact this
reception approaches what I recorded with the Beverage antenna. The
Wellbook is one amazing antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 09/12/16 at 05:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna. Thanks for watching.

Dxing with the Bonito Boni Whip: Voice of Korea 12015 kHz, Kujang, North...

Hi there, I think this is almost certainly my best daylight reception of any signal from North Korea and demonstrates how good the Boni whip is when used in a relatively quiet environment. It's a fantastic portable antenna - I just lodge it between the drivers door window and frame and voila! Recorded in Oxford UK on 15/02/17 at 14:49 hrs UTC, using a Sony ICF-SW55 receiver. Thanks for watching.

The Medium Wave Circle: a quick review of the excellent 'Medium Wave New...

Hi there, I joined the Medium Wave Circle about a year ago, based on my interest in MW DXing of course. As a 'print option' member, I receive a hard copy of their monthly journal - Medium Wave News in the post - and I have to say it's always a really excellent read. This month's edition is no different with two brilliant articles on subjects close to my heart lol - the Sony ICF-2001D and it's role as a spy radio and some experiments with Beverages and BOGs (Beverage On Ground) antennas. I know there are lots of radio clubs and groups out there, but if you're considering joining one, take a look at The Medium Wave Circle. Thanks for watching.

Office DXing wtih Boni whip: Eton Satellit vs NooElec RTL-SDR: Reach Bey...

Hi there, although not really considered 'hard-core' DX, it still felt pretty cool to copy a signal from Australia on my laptop intially, with the RTL-SDR and then (as expected) a much better signal on the brilliant Eton Satellit - and all in a noisy office. Interestingly, the Bonito Boni Whip placed by a window manages to pull in this signal with pretty reasonable SNR considering the local environment, so I was pleased. I have to say, the Boni whip is proving to be a brilliant compact antenna to keep in the car with a 'mobile DXing' kit. Recorded in Oxford UK at 13:06 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Office DXing with RTL-SDR and and few feet of wire: WWCR Nashville 15825...

Hi there, here's an ok signal from Nashville using a NooElec RT-SDR and their upconverter. Offices are notoriously noisy environments and mine is no different, so I was pleased to catch WWCR with the 'dongle' and a few feet of wire. Now wondering how I can string up 100 metres of wire across the car park lol!

A portable SDR solution and my brief initial thoughts on SDR#

Hi there, as some of you will be aware, I've taken the Elad FDM DUO out on DXpeditions previously and it's worked great. Either as a standalone unit via the Bose Soundlink Mini 2, or as a full SDR with a laptop, it performed really well, particularly with the 200 metre Beverage antenna. On the downside, using the Elad on Dxpeditions involves packing a lot of kit and of course a power source, which right now is a 12V lead acid battery.

More recently my Dxpeditions have taken place late afternoon, early evening, on an ad hoc basis, with the PL-3120ET and most recently the Eton Satellit. I've often thought how useful it would be to be able to actually view a spectrum of the BC band I'm in and so I dug out my NooElec RTL-SDR and loaded SDR# onto my smallest laptop. The combination works great, even during testing in my noisy office. Here are my thoughts on the software and hardware. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Test #3 RTM Sarawak FM 9835 kHz, Kajang...

Hi there, this station can be very difficult to hear in Europe with a reported TX azimuth of 93 degrees, we are not optimally positioned in Europe to hear them. However, both radios perform well to deliver discernible audio and to my ears at least, once again, there's very little difference between them. Let me know your thoughts. Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 17:57 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Test #2 Voice of Korea 7570 kHz (DPRK)

Hi there, the second comparison test between these great portables. For me, there's nothing in this reception at all - please let me have your views. Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at17:48 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Test #1 KYRGYZ Radio 1 4010 kHz, Bishke...

Hi there, ok so I've been extolling the virtues of the Eton Satellit for nearly a month now and caught some really excellent DX. There's no doubt that this little radio is right up there with the best portables ever in terms of ultimate sensitivity. However, how does is stack up back-to-back with the benchmark of portables - the Sony ICF-2001D?! Here is the first comparison, using the signal from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Not always an easy signal to hear in Western Europe. How do these two fine receivers compare?! Pretty close - but I'll leave it to you guys to comment. Recorded in Oxford UK on 12/02/17 at 17:22 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Medium wave DX: WRCR Rampano 1700 kHz New York, good signal and clear ID

Hi there, I last copied this station back at the end of March 2016. Nice to hear them again, in their usual spot, right at the top of the X-band. Recorded in Oxford UK on 09/12/16 at 04:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching,

Hi there, the extraction of audio from the WFED carrier nearly always require the use of LSB or ECSS LSB. However, here is my best received signal to-date that allowed the use of SYNC AM demodulation and a 4.4 kHz filter. Extremely clear and quite stable for a transatlantic signal on an indoor antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 09/12/16 at 04:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna. Thanks for watching.

Dxpedition with Bonito Boni Whip: Polski Radio 1 225 kHz, first daylight...

Hi there, this is the first time I've heard Polski Radio on longwave during daylight hours. The reception was really excellent with the Sony ICF-SW55 and Bonito Boni Whip. You might remember that during my back-to-back testing against a longwire and the Wellbrook ALA1530, the Boni Whip performed best at low frequencies. Recorded in Oxford UK on 15/02/17 at 14:46 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: an updated review of performance and features

Hi there, it's been 3 or 4 weeks since I started DXing with the Eton Satellit and so I thought it time to upload an undated review. It's not perfect, but there is no doubt whatsoever that in terms of general sensitivity and AM selectivity, it's one of the best portables on the market right now. In my example, the SYNC is the only feature with serious shortcomings, otherwise this radio has been performing brilliantly for DXing. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: Radio Inconfidencia 15190 kHz, Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Hi there, this is my first reception of Radio Inconfidencia since last July although I always try their signal when I'm on the 19 metre band. I've never heard them this early in the day previously - my last reception was around 21:00 hrs. Once again the Eton performs extremely well out in the field. Recorded in Oxford UK on 10/02/16 using a 30 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Sony ICF-SW100: AIR New Delhi 9865 kHz, Bengaluru, India

Hi there, this is the first time I've recorded AIR New Delhi for almost exactly a year. Here is a fairly clear signal with a hint of adjacent channel QRM. Once again the little Sony demonstrates excellent performance despite miracle-sized external dimensions! Recorded in Oxford UK on 27/01/17 at around 17:30 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: first reception of a weak signal from AIR Srinagar 49...

Hi there, a weak but discernible signal from a regional AIR station that I've never heard previously. Yet again the Eton Satellit demonstrates superlative performance with a longwire antenna in the middle of the afternoon. It's all a little to much to be a coincidence. It's a great radio for DXing. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at 16:58 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: first reception on this portable of Radio Hargeysa, 7...

Hi there, another exotic catch on the Eton Satellit, demonstrating yet again that it is matching the performance of my Sony ICF-SW55 and ICF-SW100 recevers with ease and very close to the ICF-2001D. I believe this is also the earliest time of day that I've recorded Radio Hargeysa, although not by much. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at 16:58 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, here is a wonderful signal from the Voice of Indonesia, Jakarta with the Eton Satellit. Complete with a very nice and clear ID, this sounds like it really could be a local AM station. Again, the Satellit performs extremely well with this relatively stronger signal (as compared to the earlier AIR regionals) with a 50 metre longwire antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at 17:15 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

MW DX: Magyar Radio 4, 1350 kHz, Budapest, Hungary, heard in Oxford UK

Hi there, in the relentless search of transatlantic signals, I often ignore medium wave transmissions from Europe. Here is another European find - a nice signal from Budapest captured on an early morning MW spectrum. Recorded in Oxford UK on 16/12/16 at 06:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

MW DX: Radio Slovenija 1, 918 kHz, Ljubljana, clear ID heard in Oxford, UK

Hi there, a nice signal with a clear ID from Slovenija at my QTH in Oxford, using the Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Recorded on 09/12/16 at 17:59 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

MW DX: CBNA CBC Radio 1, 600 kHz, Saint Anthony, N&L, Canada

Hi there, my first indoor reception of CBC Radio 1 on 600 kHz since last October and only the third time I've heard them indoors. It's always pleasing to catch transatlantic medium wave DX on low frequencies and so this was pleasing. CBC Radio 1 make regular appearances on medium wave spectrum recordings, but nearly always at their higher TX frequencies. Recorded in Oxford UK on 16/12/17 at 02:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Hi there, I'd only heard this station once previously when this recording was made, so very happy with this second reception. Once again, significant adjacent channel QRM but the Elad's phenomenal selectivity makes short work of it. I have a small collection of reception videos for transatlantic signals still clearly heard at my QTH at 8 am - more to follow. Recorded in Oxford UK on 16/12/16 at 07:59 hrs UTC and 07:59 hrs BST using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

MW DX: WUNR Brookline, 1600 kHz, Newton, Massachusetts, clear ID

Hi there, I previously heard this station in the early hours of the morning of 10/10/16 during the initial testing of the 200 metre Beverage. Great to hear them again with the Wellbrook ALA1530, indoors and catch a clear ID, despite adjacent channel QRM from 1602 kHz. Recorded in Oxford UK on 09/12/16 at 05:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, I caught this by accident a couple of mornings ago whilst on the hunt for transatlantic medium wave signals. What a beautiful interval signal with their National Anthem. Classic stuff! Recorded in Oxford UK on 16/01/17 at 04:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Hi there, this is the first time I've heard HM01 on 25 metres and the first time I've ever heard their transmissions on a portable radio. Please note there are audio tones that play out between the spoken word. The Eton Satellit once again delivers something new and it's all adding up to a little more than coincidence. Whatever the detractors say, this is a brilliant portable radio for shortwave DXing. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at 17:03 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Sony ICF-2001D, Radio Congo 6114.9 kHz, Brazzaville, first reception

Hi there, great to finally hear Radio Congo after over a year of trying. I'm not sure what was going wrong previously, but of course, this is a difficult station to hear well, in fact it's difficult to hear at all. I isuppose it's quite fitting that I finally managed it with the venerable Sony ICF-2001D! Recorded in Oxford UK on 05/02/17 at 18:58 hrs UTC using a 90 metre longwire antenna. Note that adjacent channel QRM kicks in after a minute or so of the recording, so adjustments are made to optimise the audio fidelity under difficult conditions. Thanks for watching!

Sangean ATS-803A slowly corroding away; repaired and working again

Hi there, finally repaired and working again. Really pleased to have the
Sangean working - after 20 years of bad treatment, I feel I owe it a
duty of care lol. It has sentimental value too as it was my first
digital shortwave radio. Thanks and 73!

Sangean ATS-803A slowly corroding away, needs another repair #2

Hi there, the second video in this little series. I managed to clean
enough corrosion from the battery terminals that haven't already
disintegrated and created a new terminal with a strip of high purity
aluminium. Not an ideal material as it will oxidise over time, but it's
very accessible to clean up and allows for the removal of the fly leads
I'd soldered directly onto the power board, and connection of the
batteries to the receiver as per the original design. Overall, this
should provide a more permanent repair. It also won't be necessary to
spend half an hour replacing the batteries! Thanks for watching!

Sangean ATS-803A slowly corroding away, needs another repair: #1

Hi there, some of you might remember that I confessed to dumping my
ATS-803A in the garden shed about 20 years ago and forgetting about it
until I got back into SWLing 18 months ago. Having rescued it I
discovered the battery compartment terminals had suffered major
corrosion - two terminals had corroded away completely. Furthermore, the
radio wouldn't power up via the mains socket. I managed to repair it at
the time by soldering two fly leads to the power board and route them
into the battery compartment. Further innovations followed with kitchen
foil, sellotape and glue lol resulting in a working receiver once more.
However, this 'bodge' meant that changing batteries was a rather
laborious affair, taking about half an hour every time! Having decided
recently to run a series of tests with the Sangean, against the radio it
was trying to emulate at the time - the venerable Sony ICF-2001D, I
discovered it was dead again. So, I set aside an evening this week to
take it apart again and try to effect a more permanent repair. Two more
videos on this to come - thanks for watching.

Hi there, having looked back through my uploads I was surprised to find that I've only recorded AIR Jaipur three times in the past 18 months and the last of those was a year ago. This is by far my clearest reception of their signal and testament once again to the phenomenal performance of the latest Satellit - and definitely worthy of the name!! Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at 16:32 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, only the second time I've copied NHK World Radio Japan and the first time on the tiny but brilliant Sony ICF-SW100. My first ever reception was with the venerable ICF-2001D, back in April 2016. There's not a huge difference in the performance of Sony's largest and smallest portables....I feel another back-to-back test coming on lol. Anyway, I was really pleased to catch this station during an ad-hoc DXpedition whilst out with the dog on a Friday afternoon. Recorded in Oxford UK on 27/01/17 at around17:30 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

MW DX: WWKB Buffalo New York 1520 kHz still booming into Oxford UK at 8 am

Hi there, this might be my best ever reception of WWKB and it happened at around 8 am, when often transatlantic signals have long disappeared. Despite the heavy QRM from 1520 kHz, LSB reception with the Elad FDM DUO and the Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors) delivered a superb signal around the time I normally leave for work! I may have arrived a few minutes late that morning lol. Recorded on 16/12/16 at 07:58 hrs UTC.

MW DX: a huge indoor signal from WMEX Boston Talk Radio 1510 kHz

Hi there, a huge indoor signal from WMEX with the Wellbrook ALA1530 and Elad FDM DUO. Their signal is, of course, one of the strongest to be heard in Europe, but this was unprecidented. I employed a 9 kHz audio bandwidth filter and it's a shame there was a signal of on 1512 kHz of sufficient strength h to cause a heterodyne whistle, but nevertheless, what a huge signal on the Elad/Wellbrook combo. Recorded in Oxford UK on 09/12/16 at 04:58 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching. ☺

Hi there, another best reception of an AIR regional station. Perhaps propagation was optimum for signals from the Indian subcontinent last Friday afternoon coupled with the brilliant Eton Satellit. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at 16:18 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: AIR Chennai 4920 kHz, India, best reception to-date

Hi there, my best reception to-date of this regional AIR station. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 at16:12 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: AIR Kurseong 4895 kHz, best reception to-date

Hi there, another fine performance from this brilliant Eton portable radio. I've only recorded this AIR regional station a couple of times in the past 18 months and this is by far my best reception. The Satellit just keeps on demonstrating brilliant performance and here in Oxford, every time I venture out on a DXpedition, it keeps on raining lol. Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/02/17 ay 16;10 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, another nice example of the little Sony's excellent DX capabilities. Here the reception is as good as previous recordings with the ICF-2001D, amongst others. Quite amazing to copy one of the more exotic stations on shortwave with a receiver that fits into your shirt pocket! Recorded in Oxford UK on 27/01/17 at around 17:30 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

The Eton Satellit: Voice of Africa 9505 kHz, Sudan, best signal to-date

Hi there, the clearest signal to date from the Voice of Africa, Sudan, with the brilliant Eton Satellit. Once again, it's previous reputation as an unworthy successor to the Satellit line appears to be unjustified. Recorded in Oxford UK on Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 22/01/17 at 18:17 hrs UTC, using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, I had to share this second reception video of Radio Guinée because the signal was so brilliant on the Eton and the music superb. Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 22/01/17 at 18:40 hrs UTC, using a 50 metre longwire. I'm going out shortly with the Eton and the Sony ICF-2001D to make some comparison videos - with a longwire. More of that to come. Thanks for watching!

Sony ICF-SW100 miniature DX marvel: KCBS Pyongyang 6100 kHz, North Korea

Hi there, they don't grow on trees - to borrow a pun - but they do pack a punch for their diminutive size. North Korea on a difficult frequency with a radio no larger than a pack of 20 cigarettes?? That'll be the brilliant Sony ICF-SW100. Sharing the airwaves on this frequency with Radio Afghanistan, here's another recording from the same session when the North Korean's transmission was dominant on 6100 kHz. Recorded in Oxford UK on 27/01/17 at around 17:15 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks to the tree for the perch lol and thanks to you for watching.

Hi there, I'm currently in Genoa on a business trip and of course I took the brilliant Eton Satellit with me. Now, I know from experience that DXing on MW or SW from a noisy hotel room is usually near impossible. However, in the very early hours of yesterday morning, I managed to catch BBC Radio 5 Live on 693 kHz with an excellent signal. Recorded in Genoa, Italy on 01/02/17 at 23:14 hrs UTC using the internal ferrite rod antenna. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, WFED can be very difficult to hear well, particularly compared to some of the other East Coast US stations. I was therefore pleased to catch this signal with pretty clear audio, despite the severe adjacent channel QRM. Hi there, this is my last available recording for uploading to YouTube and of course it feels quite poignant now that they're gone from shortwave. I captured their signals with the Eton Satellit on both frequencies in the 120 metre band and on 60 metres. A very nice performance from the Eton once again and although reception on 2325 kHz was a little stronger later into the session, I'm very happy to have recorded these signals together. I hope Senator Nick Xenophon's new legislation he has planned can get them back on air. Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 22/01/17 at 17:55 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, a nice signal from the DPRK with the Eton Satellit. This is my first reception of them on this frequency for nearly 15 months and my best reception on this frequency to-date, so a pleasing catch. Once again the Satellit demonstrates that it's far from a 'duffer'...it's actually a very good receiver, with excellent sensitivity that I'm sure will challenge the best portables in my collection. more on that to come. Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 22/01/17 at 17:40 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.
