Rádio Clube do Pará 4885 kHz, Belém, copied in UK with poor modulation u...

Hi there, Rádio Clube do Pará is like a beacon for me on the 60 metre broadcast band. It's always there, usually with decent audio, sometimes weak, sometimes almost booming. Here at the first attempt with the Bonito NTi MegaLoop FX antenna, is their signal, with audio, but rather poor modulation. You can actually see the rather odd asymmetry of the carrier/modulation on the spectrum. I'm not sure if any other DXers have reported this recently. Nevertheless, an excellent demonstration of performance from the portable Bonito magnetic loop.

Hi there, taking into account a TX power of 1 kW, here is a very nice signal from Radio Voz Missionaria, Brazil. Once again the Bonito NTi MegaLoop FX antenna demonstrates sensitivity performance with the Elad to at least the same level as my Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna.

Streaming Radio 5 Live whilst driving through a forest of wind turbines ...

Ok, so maybe 'forest' is stretching things slightly lol. The radio in our vehicle on LW was pretty horrendous....all you could hear was electrical artefacts from the engine. Fortunately we were able to keep up with Wimbledon and the World Cup on our journey by streaming Radio 5 Live on a 3G signal. Enjoy the scenery of wind turbines - an impressive number were spotted during our 8 hour trip back to Calais.

A review of the excellent Bonito NTi MegaDipol MD300DX antenna

Hi there, here's a wrap-up video of my DXpedition to Nantes, France. I was fortunate to be there at a conference, but at the same time, I had quite a bit of free time in the evenings for DXing. My thanks to SDRPlay and Bonito for supplying the equipment to me for testing. I highly recommend all three components of what was a an excellent, temporary listening post, however, of the antennas, the MegaDipol was a stand-out performer because it performed as well as the MegaLoop. In an noisy environment that was quite unexpected.

Hi there, I thought I'd share this huge signal from Biblis using the SDRPlay RSPduo with a 20 kHz audio bandwidth filter. So when I say huge, I mean huge lol. With a decent external speaker, such as my Bose SoundLink Mini, this would sound really great.

Hi there, when I was in Zurich last month, equipped with my XHDATA D-808 portable and Sony AN-71 reel antenna, I basically couldn't hear anything on SW. I did copy North Korea for a couple of minutes on 15245 kHz, but there was so much noise, it really wasn't a pleasant listen...until they faded away completely, leaving just the electrical hum in my ears lol. With a much more sophisticated antenna, that's also portable, the world opens up, even in noisy environments - and to prove the point, here's a nice signal from Radio Bangladesh Betar.

A review update of the excellent SDRPlay RSPduo, 2 months in...

Hi there, here's an update on the brilliant SDRPlay RSPduo. I took it to Nantes with me a couple of weeks ago and set up with two antennas - the Bonito NTi MegaLoop and MegaDipol. All of the equipment performed very well but almost as important was the portability. Here you effectively have two SDR receivers, USB powered with a very small form-factor and very lightweight. Coupled to a magnetic loop or other antenna, you virtually have all of the capability of your shack, when travelling. A brilliant opportunity to DX from another location/country with two very high specification receivers. The latest version of SDRuno (V1.23) is superb and although optimised for a large computer screen, it can be made to work on a small laptop such as my Lenovo ultrabook. Highly recommend the RSPduo to anyone wanting a top notch SDR at a modest price.

Hi there, with my focus on long term testing of the Bonito MegaLoop FX antenna, my Wellbrook loop is sitting in the garden shed not getting used. Radio Guinée 9650 kHz Conakry copied in Nantes hotel with Bonito MegaLoo...

Hi there, the rather exotic Radio Guinée isn't so exotic as a DX catch, their advertised TX power is 50 kW and so whilst not exactly a flame-thrower, it's perfectly possible to copy their signal in a relatively quiet environment on the whip of a decent portable. Here is a recording from my hotel with a sophisticated antenna, which effectively offsets the negative impact of noise on the SNR. Tuning around on my old ICF-SW7600G is very enjoyable way to spend an evening lol.

Hi there, here's a decent daylight signal from Ethiopia, as copied from my 5th floor hotel room in Nantes, France with the SDRPlay RSPduo and Bonito NTi MegaDipol (oriented into a sort of vertical inverted 'V' - due to space constraints). Such a treat to hear very nice DX from a hotel - it's never happened before, but then this is the first time I've used an SDR with two very good antennas when travelling. Very much looking forward to testing this lot in Brazil, starting mid-September.

Hi there, this can be quite a challenging signal to copy on a portable, mainly because the adjacent channel QTM can be a big issue, which makes filtering is important. On an SDR it's much easier to mitigate adjacent noise of course and given that this is once again recorded from a hotel, it's a very decent copy. The wonderful MegaDipol antenna does it again, in conjunction with the brilliant SDRduo.

Hi there, here's a signal from Belém, Brazil, a city I know very well almost booming into my QTH in Oxford UK. This might be the best reception at home to-date, although I need to check this. A slightly clearer signal on the S-8800 than the 909x, which also performs really well in delivering recovered audio from this signal.

Hi there, here's a pretty strong signal from North Korea, as copied from my 5th floor hotel room terrace, using the brilliant Bonito NTi MegaLoop FX magnetic loop antenna. There's a little bit of noise present in the recovered audio, but otherwise what a nice signal copied from such a noisy location. I love the fact that these Bonito antennas are totally portable - and perform really well. At 00:44 seconds into the video I pull the plug on the Sony, leaving it just on the telescopic - nothing is heard of course...just goes to show a really good antenna makes all the difference!

Hi there, here's another signal from North Korea, copied from my 5th floor hotel room in Nantes, France. As I mentioned in the previous video, DX of this nature shouldn't really be possible and despite the MegaDipol being an electric field antenna, the noise-floor for this reception was better than -120 dBs. Superb performance from both the antenna and the SDRPlay RDPduo.

Hi there, here's a pretty decent signal from Pyongyang North Korea, recorded from my hotel room in Nantes, France. OK, so I had the benefit of a small exterior terrace, however it wasn't much larger than a balcony. What a great job by this super compact, very high gain antenna. You don't normally copy this sort of stuff from hotels! Also a word for the brilliant SDRPplay RSPduo receiver. Also superb.

Temporary listening post set-up in Nantes, Northern France

Hi there, having driven for over 7 hours from Calais to Nantes, I finally got to my hotel and set up a temporary listening post with the SDRPlay RSPduo, Bonito MegaDipol and MegaLoop. I also have the Eton Satellit with me and specifically for LW (and SW), the Sony ICF-SW7600G. There is quite a lot of noise at this hotel, but I'm hoping the MegaLoop in particular will enable some nice catches. Saying that, so far, the noise-floor with the MegaDipol has been as low as the MegaLoop on much HF.

Hi there, having taken the Eurostar to Calais, we got on the road and after an hour or so stopped about 100 km NE of Rouen. I checked out the signal from Radio 5 Live and Radio 4 on 198 kHz. The LW signal was there but weak, as might be expected, Radio 5 Live was pretty clear though.
