The Bonito Boni Whip goes from strength-to-strength: hardcore DXing in compact package

My latest article on SWLing Post...

Huge shortwave signal #2: Voice of Greece 9420 kHz, Avlis, 11 kHz filter...

Hi there, another huge signal, this time Helliniki Radiophonia from Avlis, Greece. Very nice audio quality for shortwave, one of the best actually. Recorded in Oxford UK on 23/04/17 at 05:16 hrs UTC, using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Huge shortwave signal #1: China Radio International 11775 kHz

Hi there, I don't very often upload recpetion videos of the rather ubiquitous CRI. Despite their omni-presence on shortwave, which at times 'gets in the way' of DX, I have always supported CRI because no other nation/organisation supports the shortwave medium that we cherish so much, as they do. Here is a huge signal on the 25 metre broadcast band, 19.5 kHz wide at maximum amplitude and some very nice audio. Two more reception videos featuring huge shortwave signals to come.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 23/04/17 at 05:12 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors).

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Radio Hargeysa 7120 kHz Somaliland

Hi there, not the best reception I've obtained from either receiver, there was a lot of adjacent QRM present, but both perform quite well in SYNC USB mode. In AM mode the adjacent noise on the the Eton sounds significant to my ears. As usual, your comments are very much appreciated.

Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 18:35 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Excellent performance from the Boni Whip and Eton Satellit: Radio Bandei...

For me, this reception sums up how brilliant the Bonito Boni Whip performs in a quiet environment, with the equally briliant Eton Satellit. Such a powerful, yet compact DXing solution. I can't recommend either highly enough. When you consider this is a 10 kW signal from South America and intended for a regional audience....quite amazing.

Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 21:10 hours UTC. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Radio Fana 6110 kHz, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Hi there, here is a decent signal from Ethiopia in the early evening, comparing the veteran 'legend' against one of the best performing portables currently on the market. As usual, please feel free to offer your comments, but in MHO the Eton's got this.

Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 18:51 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Radio Santa Cruz, 6134.8 kHz LSB, Santa Cruz, Boliva, first indoor recep...

Hi there, it's exactly a year today since I last uploaded an indoor reception video of this rather exotic catch. Always nice to copy this station which can be tricky to hear well due to the rather close proximity of Radio Aparecida on this part of the SW spectrum.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/04/17 at 01:14 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors) Thanks for watching.

Alcaravan Radio 5910 kHz Colombia ECSS LSB, first indoor reception since...

Hi there, great to hear Alcaravan Radio again in the shack after an absence from my SW spectrum of about 8 months. once again the Elad FDM DUO operating via the FDM-SW2 software performs very well, this time in ECSS mode. LSB to produce discernible audio from this weak signal. Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/04/17 at 02:04 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Dxing with Eton Satellit and Bonito Boni whip: Radio Voz Missionaria 594...

Hi there, great to catch this difficult signal with the Bonito Boni Whip. Certainly demonstrates this antenna has the capability to pull in what I consider hard-core DX.

Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 21:38 hours UTC. Thanks for watching.

Emisoras Pio XII 5952.44 kHz, Bolivia, best indoor reception in Oxford, UK

Hi there, another very difficult signal to hear well at home and so very pleasing to catch them with my best signal to-date. On a DXpedition, the low noise environment certainly helps with discernibility. Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/04/17 at 01:06 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna. Thanks for watching.

Radio Mosoj Chaski 3310 kHz, Cochabamba Bolivia, first indoor reception ...

Hi there, really pleased to hear Mosoj Chaski at home again, the first time since last summer. This is an extremely difficult signal to hear well at home. A quiet environment such as the wood I used for DXing is necessary to achieve excellent signal-to-noise and thus fully discernible audio from this weak signal. Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/04/17 at 00:45 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

DXing with the Eton Satellit & Bonito Boni Whip: Superb signal from Bang...

Hi there, this is a wonderful signal from Bangladesh, probably the best signal I've ever received from them. Once again the ultra-compact Bonito Boni Whip antenna demonstrates brilliant performance in conjunction with the equally brilliant Eton Satellit. Both pieces of DX equipment continue to amaze me. Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 19:38 hours UTC. Thanks for watching.

USAF Emergency Action Message received in Oxford UK on 4724 KHz USB

Hi there, this is the first USAF EAM I've received since last October. On the previous occasion the signal was stronger. Obviously there's an element of luck in hearing this as transmissions are sporadic. With everything going on in the world right now, particularly the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula, I suppose it's quite possible that more of these transmissions will be heard. Recorded in Oxford UK on 18/04/17 at 01:28 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

'The Buzzer' UVB-76 4625 kHz strongest signal in Oxford, UK for a year

Hi there, this is the strongest signal I've received from UVB-76 since April 2016. I still wonder about the purpose of this mysterious signal lol. Recorded with an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors) at 01:44 hrs UTC on 18/04/17. Thanks for watching.

MW DX: WENE Fox Sports 1430 Endicott, NY, still being heard in Oxford UK...

Hi there, another recording from this series of transatlantic reception videos, all of which were obtained at 8 am. This time the signal fades in and out a little, but WENE Endicott is not one of the easier transatlantic catches, so pleasing to hear their signal a bit later into the morning.

Recorded on 01/01/17 at 07:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

MW DX: WWKB Buffalo New York 1520 kHz still loud and clear into Oxford U...

Hi there, despite the usual heavy adjacent QRM and 'relatively' late hour of the morning, this frequently heard signal from Buffalo New York was was still loud and clear at my QTH in Oxford UK at 8 am. Recorded on 07/01/17 using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 actve loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Panasonic RF-B65: excellent signal from Bangladesh Beta...

A wonderfully strong signal from Bangladesh Betar on the 41 metre broadcast band. Both radios demonstrate excellent recovered audio and again, I can't really split them apart other than perhaps the size/quality of their respective speakers. A great performance all round.

Recorded at the woods in Oxford on 26/03/17 at 16:03 hrs UTC. using a 30 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Radio Congo 6114.9 kHz, Brazzaville

Hi there, first of all, this was a very exciting catch because it was the first time I had copied Radio Congo. I understand that their transmissions are rather sporadic and so there was certainly an element of luck in hearing them during a DXpedition. As always I would be very grateful for your comments on these receivers - both cope well, delivering some very clear audio, despite adjacent channel QRM.

Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 18:55 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Panasonic RF-B65: AIR Jeypore 5040 kHz, India

Hi there, another comparison of the Eton and Panasonic, this time with the signal from Jeypore. Once again both receivers perform well and I'm finding it difficult to split them. As always, your comments and views are most welcome! Recorded at the woods in Oxford on 26/03/17 at 16:23 hrs UTC. using a 30 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Medium wave DX: WMEX Boston Talk Radio 1510 kHz still clearly heard in O...

Hi there, WMEX Boston is often one of the strongest transatlantic MW signals to be heard at my QTH in Oxford, UK. Nevertheless, it was great to copy their signal relatively 'late'. Recorded on 07/01/17 at 07:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Medium wave DX: WFED 1500 kHz, Washington, still clearly heard in Oxford...

Hi there, another recording of a transatlantic signal continuing to be clearly heard at my shack in Oxford, UK. Quite nice to be listening to a MW station from the other side of the Atlantic, just as I'm leaving for work in the morning. WFED isn't one of the easiest transatlantic signals to hear well, so this was doubly pleasing. Recorded on 09/12/16 at 07:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Radio Nacional da Brasilia 11780 kHz - ...

Hi there, this time the difference between the two radios, in my opinion, is much closer. Not sure which one I prefer, probably the Eton, because it's recovered audio sounds slightly crisper, although to my ears the background hiss is a little more prominent. As always, your comments very welcome. I suppose that given one of these radios is a legend and the other has received a lot of criticism, the difference in performance certainly doesn't reflect their relative reputations! Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 19:20 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Radio Brazil Central 11815 kHz, Goiania...

Hi there, another comparison of these two great radios and in my opinion, the Sony's got this one. Despite the narrowest filter setting on the Eton, the adjacent noise creeping in to the recovered audio is more obvious and thus the combination of filtering and SYNC on the Sony proves to be the winning set-up. Nevertheless, still a very good performance from the Eton.

Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 19:16 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Dxing with Eton Satellit and Bonito Boni whip: Radio Aparecida 9630 kHz,...

Hi there, I can't believe this is only the third time I've managed to copy Radio Aparecida well enough on this frequency to upload a reception video. Furthermore, to catch such a rarely heard signal with the ultra-compact Bonito Boni Whip is quite amazing - another superb performance, from receiver and antenna.

Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 21:24 hours UTC. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Panasonic RF-B65: Voice of The People 3912 kHz, South K...

Hi there, only the second time I've copied this transmission from South Korea on the 75 metre broadcast band. Always a challenge to hear them at all, let alone well, so it was really pleasing to catch them again on both portables. As always, please let me know how you think they performed - another close call!

Recorded at the woods in Oxford on 26/03/17 at 16:30 hrs UTC. using a 30 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

CROSS Corsen maritime station jamming 1650 kHz to deter pirate transmiss...

My thanks to our friend and colleague EuropeDX for confirming this is in fact CROSS Corsen maritime station in Brest. I should have know this, as I have twice previously uploaded reception videos for CROSS Corsen! I'm guessing they are effectively jamming the channel to deter pirate transmissions.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 06/04/17 ay 00:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Medium wave X-band: test tone signal (?) has mysteriously appeared on 1...

Hi there, I first copied this signal on the X-band a few days ago. It looks and sounds like a test tone signal. But who knows? If any of my radio friends/colleagues can identify this signal, let me know! Thanks!

Recorded in Oxford UK on 06/04/17 ay 00:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Monitoring WWCR, Rádio Difusora de Roraima & Rádio Clube do Pará simulta...

Hi there, it's been a while since I copied Rádio Difusora de Roraima & Rádio Clube do Pará at home, but there they were on my SW spectrum yesterday morning. So, I decided to monitor their signal along with WWCR on the 60 metre broadcast band. The Elad FDM DUO when operated via the FDM-SW2 software allows you to monitor multiple IF spectrums simultaneously (requires a large monitor) so this was a stroll in the park lol. Recorded in Oxford UK on 11/04/17 at 01:41 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

This has to be the most haunting transmission on shortwave...

I wouldn't want to be able to receive this 'locally'...gives me the shivers lol.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/04/17 at 16:30 hrs UTC using a 240 metre barbed wire fence as an antenna. Thanks for watching and don't have nightmares....

Tecsun PL-310ET + 240 metre barbed wire fence antenna = 116 signals dete...

Hi there, here is a review of the 116 signals detected during an ETM scan, using the 240 metre barbed wire fence as an antenna. Interesting that just on the telescopic antenna, the PL-310ET detected 96 signals, so just another 20 with the fence. Quite likely a matching issue, but that will shortly be resolved with a piece of kit I have coming, thanks to our friend and colleage Chuck Rippel. More on that to come. The last time I tried this experiment, the ETM scan picked up 100 signals, so another excellent performance from the brilliant little Tecsun.  In the meantime, who says there's nothing left on shortwave??!!

Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/04/17 at 15:30 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Tecsun PL-310ET + telescopic antenna = 96 signals detected using ETM scan

Hi there, I was very impressed with the results of this ETM scan on the PL-310ET using just it's telescopic antetnna - 94 signals detected - who says there's nothing on shortwave any more?! Another scan coming on the next video, using the 240 metre barbed wire fence as the antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/04/17 at 15:20 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

MW DX: CKVO 710 kHz, Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador (repeats VOC...

Hi there this was a surprising find on 710 kHz and a PF. The fact that I know this station to carry VOCM programming was my clue to its identification - very handy indeed! Previously I've copied WOR New York and Radio Rebelde on this frequency, both on more than one occasion, so it's great to hear something new. Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/03/17 at 03:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Panasoninc RF-B65: Radio Hargeysa 7120 kHz, Somaliland

Hi there, here's a very challenging daylight signal from Radio Hargeysa, Somaliland, some 11,800 km distant from my QTH in Oxford UK. Both radios do a great job detecting this signal in the middle of the afternoon, albeit with the longwire, but again it's a balance in terms of audio quality versus adjacent noise. Let me know what you think.

Eton Satellit: Radio New Zealand International first reception on 49 met...

Hi there, here is a relatively weak signal from RNZI, but I thought I would upload it because this is the first time I've managed to copy them on 5995 kHz. Their TX azimuth of 35 degrees understandably directs their signal straight across the Pacific and onward to the West Coast of the United States, so this copy on the Eton Satellit with 30 metres of wire was very pleasing. Worth bearing in mind as you watch the video lol, oh and listen out for the clear ID at 1:58. Recorded at the woods in Oxford on 26/03/17 at 15:50 hrs UTC, using a 30 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Panasoninc RF-B65: Voice of Armenia 4810 kHz, Yerevan-G...

Hi there, another comparison of these two fine portables, this time the signal from Armenia, 3740 km distant from my QTH in Oxford, UK. In my view the quality of the reception is once again very similar, the only real difference is in audio tone, where the Panasonic sounds a bit more natural perhaps. Either way, let me know your views.

Eton Satellit vs Panasoninc RF-B65: Radio Guinée 9650 kHz on the telesco...

Hi there, here is a comparison of (in my opinion) one of the best shortwave portables currently available today versus one of the best ever, the Panasonic RF-B65, built around 1990. I was fortuate to buy an RF-B65 off eBay in as-new condition, mind you, I paid for it lol, they still go for a lot of money and for good reason. Sensitivity on the RF-B65 is up there with the ICF-2001 and although it lacks SYNC, it does have SSB and fine tuning. With a paperback-sized case, it's still a very compelling portable shortwave receiver and has something of a cult following amonst DXers. So here is the signal from Radio Guinée using just the telescopic antennas on both radios. Let me know your opinions, it's quite a close call. Recorded at the woods in Oxford on 26/03/17 at 16:52 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Dxing with the Bonito Boni-Whip and Eton Satellit: Zambia NBC Radio 1 59...

Hi there, the signal from Lusaka on the crowded 49 metre broadcast band is often competing with numerous adjacent channel signals. This coupled with a (usually) weak carrier makes it one of the most difficult DX signals to hear well, amongst those DX signals that can actually be heard. It was therefore very pleasing to copy them with my excellent compact DXing kit comprising the Bonito Boni Whip and Eton Satellit. Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 21:52 hours UTC. Thanks for watching.

Dxing with the Bonito Boni-Whip and Eton Satellit: Radio Voz Missionaria...

Hi there, another signal that's difficult to hear well in Europe (as is often the case with the low power regional Brazilian stations) and once again the Eton Satellit and Bonito Boni-Whip do a superb job in delivering perfectly discernible audio. This is arguably my best ever reception of Radio Voz MIssionaria on 31 metres and when you consider the Boni-Whip radiating element was only about 1 metre off the ground, quite amazing. Recorded at the woods in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 21:29 hours UTC. Thanks for watching.

Thank you to the 850+ friends and subscribers of Oxford Shortwave Log

Hi there, a long overdue channel update from the 'DX' woods with thanks once again for the wonderful support!

The Bonito Boni-Whip: proving to be excellent portable antenna for DXing

MW DX: CFRB Newstalk 1010 Toronto clear signal into Oxford UK at 8:00 am

Hi there, another transatlantic MW signal heard at my QTH at 8:00 am in the morning (also 8:00 hrs UTC). It's great to listen to US stations just as I'm leaving for work in the morning and yet again the Elad and Wellbrook combination works very well to deliver fully discernible audio. Recorded in Oxford UK on 02/01/17. Thanks for watching.

MW DX: WBBR 1130 kHz New York, clear signal into Oxford UK at 8:00 am

Hi there, here's a very clear transatlantic MW signal, heard at my QTH in Oxford UK at 8:00 am in the morning. Recorded using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors) on 02/01/17. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit vs Sony ICF-2001D: Radio Bandeirantes 11925 kHz, Sao Paolo

Hi there, here is another comparison of the legendary shortwave postable = the ICF-2001D (or 2010 if you reside in the US). Both radios do an excellent job with this signal, providing  discernible audio from what is basically quite a weak carrier. Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 12/02/16 at 19:25 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit: Zanzibar BC 11735 KHz on the telescopic antenna

Hi there, I can't remember if I've tried to hear Zanzibar BC on a portable receiver previously with just the telescopic, but either way, the Satellit manages it pretty well on this occasion. Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 20:43 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit: Voice of Indonesia 9525 kHz on the telescopic antenna

Hi there, here is another signal, this time from Indonesia, demonstrating again that the Eton Satellit is quite capable on it's (relatively short) telescopic antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 20:52 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Medium wave DX: WSCR 670 The Score Chicago 670 kHz, heard in Oxford, UK

Hi there, very pleased with this personal first from Chicago. Recorded in Oxford UK on 16/01/17 at 04:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.

Eton Satellit: Radio Guinée 9650 kHz on the telescopic antenna

Hi there, here is the signal from Guinea with just the telescopic antenna on the Eton Satellit. I tried this again today during a test with the Panasonic RF-B65 and the Satellit is right up there with it. Once again proving to be an excellent portable receiver. Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 at 23:42 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, as Mad Radio DXer pointed out earlier, the very wide AM filter assists with producing decent audio, despite the very small speaker. Here is a very stable, clear signal from Oman, using the 240 metre barbed wire fence as a temporary antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/02/17 around 17:00 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
