Hi there, it's not often that I DX so early in the day (unless it's in the morning from a night time session). This reception of Radio Free North Korea is a PF, so a pleasing catch. The distance from my QTH in Crete to the transmitter site is about 2300 miles. A very nice daytime performance from the Eton and Bonito antenna.
Recorded on 22/05/17 at 12:46 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
A nice signal in Crete from the former RAF VOLMET transmission in the UK and the first time I've copied it outside of the UK. Another great job from the MegActive MA305 and Eton Satellit.
Recorded on 22/05/17 at 01:20hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is the only transmission listed on this frequency (actually 5055.5 kHz, but I would appreciate if any of our fellow utility transmission/beacon specialists could confirm. If the ID is correct, then this is another PF, which is always nice of course!
Recorded on 22/05/17 at 01:17 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, another personal first - this is a Russian channel marker that I've never been able to hear in the UK - not even seen a carrier. Another pleasing result with this super-compact DXing set-up.
Recorded on 22/05/17 at 01:11 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is my first reception of S32 on 3828 kHz and it set a pattern as I was able to receive other channel markers in Crete that I'd never been able to hear in the UK. Once again, a very nice performance from the Eton and Bonito combo.
Recorded on 22/05/17 at 00:56 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is my first reception of 'The Pip' with a portable receiver. All three previous receptions were with the Elad FDM DUO running via the FDM-SW2 software. Great to hear this rather mysterious signal again whilst in Crete - and demonstrating once again the DX credentials of the MegActive MA305 E-field antenna. Recorded on 22/05/17 at 00:56 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I was having a hunt around the local shops here in Crete for something I could use as a mount for my E-field MegActive MA305 antenna...and there it was...a Selfie stick for less than 10 Euros. Perfect - well almost! Actually it's working very well as a cheap, portable solution. I'm already on the second floor, but using the stick adds a little more height and takes the antenna a couple of metres further away from the building. When I get back to the UK I'm going to use it with my cheap camera tripod and some tubing to create a stable mount, with decent height, for use out in the woods. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is a weak signal which I immediately confused with Radio New Zealand Pacific, but in checking eibispace.de, realised it was actually VOH from South Korea. Despite the less then optimum recovered audio, this is excellent daylight performance from the MA305 and Satellit. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 17:05 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Another station in the 'Addis Ababa' collection lol and another strong signal with very nice music. At this point the Bonito USB battery back was still operating on it's initial charge and the green LED on the coaxial power inserter was telling me the voltage was still perfectly acceptable. Brilliant performance as I'd been DXing for several hours in total, at this point. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 17:00 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, another nice signal from Ethiopia, although this time local QRM is beginning to creep into the delivered audio - as is a passing jetliner lol. Not much I can do to mitigate that with the E-field MA305, fortunately I've been very lucky so far, with minimal electrical noise. Nevertheless, really great to hear these African stations so well - I'm also going to try on medium wave at some point before I leave. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 16:55 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
A very strong signal from Ethiopia, perhaps not surprisingly as Crete is significantly closer to the TX site than my QTH. This is also by far the earliest time of day (local and UTC) that I've ever copied their signal - nice to hear them whilst the sun is still shining! Recorded on 21/05/17 at 16:50 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Another signal from Bangladesh, this time during daylight hours, on a lower frequency and with a stronger, clearer signal. Another nice result for this compact DXing set-up. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 16:45 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this 300 kW transmission from Japan to an intended audience in North Korea reaches the Mediterranean very well indeed. I've not heard this signal previously, so nice to catch a PF during this holiday/DXpedition!
Another station that is often heard in the UK, although this is the earliest time of day (UTC) that I've ever copied them. Usually quite weak with adjacent and co-channel QRM from Hams, this was an excellent result with the MA305 and Satellit. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 16:35 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, a nice daytime signal from Indonesia here in Crete via the Eton Satellit and MA305 antenna. In the UK, this signal can be heard quite well on a telescopic antenna in a quiet environment and like a local AM with a large antenna out in the woods, so given my current location, this was a great result. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 16:23 hrs UTC.
Thanks for watching.
Hi there, nice to copy North Korea from my listening post in Crete. I'm slightly addicted to their programming at present and it's the beauty of the shortwave communication medium - access to what they really think about all the tension on the Korean Peninsula right now. The MA305 coupled to the Eton Satellit had no problem delivering recovered audio on these two frequencies.
Recorded on 21/05/17 at 15:32 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is my first reception of Bangladesh Betar on this frequency for 15 months, so very pleased to finally hear them again on 19 metres, dsspite the weak signal. Recorded on 21/05/17 at 15:38 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, most, if not all of the US-based SW stations were coming in to Crete very well, so before I shut up shop for the night, I recorded this nice signal from Nashville. A breeze really for the MA305 and Satellit. Next to try for South America, but first some early evening, daylight reception videos.
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 00:48 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Another regional AIR station heard from the balcony of my holiday apartment. The time here is 3 hours ahead of UTC, so it was quite late - or should I say early - an hour or so before dawn. These regional AIR catches made me realise that the MA305 antenna should offer remarkable performance in a truly quiet environment - something that I will explore further when I get back to the UK.
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 00:39 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, only the 4th time I've heard this signal well enough to record it and upload to the channel. Again, I'm assisted by my location, but to hear this regional AIR station on a compact set-up from the balcony of a holiday apartment was really pleasing.
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 00:34 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Transmitting from almost the most southern point of the Indian subcontinent, this is a station that I've only ever heard previously with very large external antennas (50 metre + longwire/ 240 metre barbed wire fence) or the Wellbrook ALA1530. Again, I am assisted by my location, which is closer to the transmitter, but nevertheless, this recording certainly demonstrates the DXing credentials of this antenna/receiver combination.
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 00:31 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, my current location in Crete puts me about 2,200 km closer to the transmitter at Bishkek and it shows with this reception. In the UK this is another signal that is very difficult to hear well without a longwire in a quiet environment.
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 00:21 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I guess you would call this this sister signal of RTM Sarawak FM and just as tricky to hear in Europe with a reported TX azimuth of 93 degrees. Once again this compact DXing set-up delivers, powered by AA batteries and USB!
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 00:16 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here's another station that I've only ever heard previously with a longwire or the Wellbrook ALA1530. Again, I wasn't expecting to hear quite such an exotic signal, but once again, the compact MA305 E-field antenna and Satellit combination delivered.
Recorded on 20/05/17 at 23:45 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is a very difficult catch in the Europe, primarily because of their reported TX azimuth of 93 degrees. Here the MA305 and Satellit perform really well to deliver some audio from a very weak signal - and please bear in mind that I've never heard this station previously previously with anything shorter than a 50 metre longwire antenna. Quite an amazing result for an ultra-compact set-up.
Hi there, another first reception - this is the first time I've heard CRI from their relay in Mali. An excellent start to my DXpedition (o.k. it's meant to be a holiday, but these days it counts as both lol. Recorded on 20/05/17 at 22:58 hrs UTC and note this is two videos 'stitched' together. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this was a pleasant surprise as it's first time I've copied NHK World Radio Japan on this frequency. The Bonito MegActiv MA305 coupled to the Eton did a superb job from my balcony. Recorded on 20/05/17 at 23:13 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, the trip to Cape Verde was scuppered and so here I am on the beautiful island of Crete. Thunderstorms the first night wasn't much of a welcome, but in the early hours of this morning I was able to set up the Bonito MegActiv MA305 and Eton Satellit on my large balcony. Some very interesting catches were had, particularly considering hotels and what are essentially public access buildings have a tendency to be electrically very noisy. Both the MA305 (powered via USB) and the Eton performed really well. Reception videos to follow. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I haven't heard this signal on the 19 metre broadcast band since last July, so another pleasing catch. Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/05/17 at 17:37 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, great to see/hear a decent signal from Meyerton, all the way down there in South Africa - and from a noisy office. Once again the NooElec RTL-SDR and upconverter manage to do a good job of converting my laptop into an SDR! The antenna used for this reception was a piece of wire, about 4 or 5 metres long, attached to a metal window frame. My office has become a clandestine listening post lol. Recorded on 10/05/17 at 16:53 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, my first reception of the more difficult signal on 3586 kHz in more than a year, so a very welcome catch! Recorded on 26/04/17 at 01:08 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, brilliant reception considering the low TX power of this signal from the other side of the Atlantic. I've heard them a few times previously, but usually only possible on a DXpedition, out of the 'electrosmog'! As usual, let me know your thoughts. So far, I think the Eton is slightly ahead of the Sangean, both in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. The latter perhaps not such a surprise, however, still fascinating to see and hear these two portables go up against each other. Many more videos on this to come.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 13/05/17 at 01:55 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire antenna. Ignore the clock time-difference, there was only a few seconds between recordings. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, I thought I'd copied this station a couple of times previously, but I can only find one upload, back in September 2016, so nice to hear them again. Heavy adjacent QRM necessitates the use of USB to recover audio, but the Elad has phenomenal selectivity and thus not a problem.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 23/02/17 at 04:59 am using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this reception is presumed but quite likely to be the source of the signal as it's a 50 kW powerhouse lol on the East Coast. Perhaps one of my radio colleagues with local knowledge and good ears can provide further insights!
Recorded in Oxford UK using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is the first decent signal heard from Presque Isle this calendar year. Still feels like an 'event' hearing a MW signal clearly from the other side of the Atlantic.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 23/02/17 at 01:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, my first reception of this station since early last year, so very pleasing to hear them again. A decent signal in daylight hours here in the UK on the 60 metre broadcast band.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/05/17 at 17:33 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, WFED historically has been one of the more difficult transatlantic MW signals to hear with decent audio, however in the past 3 months their signal has, at times, been heard very clearly. Here is another example where there's some fading, but ends with superb signal strength and audio clarity. Recorded in Oxford UK on 23/02/17 at 06:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is presumed, but the most likely candidate for UK reception on 940 kHz with a TX power of 50 kW. Recorded in Oxford UK on 31/01/17 at 02:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is the first time I've heard the Voice of Nigeria on 7255 kHz since September 2016, so very pleasing to hear them again. Both recievers deliver decent recovered audio and once again I'd be interested in your views.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/05/17 at 18:31 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is a very nice signal from the archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. Both receivers perform well with the longwire and again I'm interested in your views.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/05/17 at 17:41 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is a very strong signal from Gander, the strongest actually for quite some time. As usual the Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 combination make this type of USB utility transmission a bit of a breeze when conditions of propagation are good. Recorded in Oxford UK on 26/04/17 at 01:20 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here's the first comparison of these two receivers in darkness, using a 50 metre longwire. The signal here from CKZN has been previously stated at 1 KW, although right now short-wave.info is suggesting 300 Watts. If anyone with local knowledge has more information I'd be very grateful. Either way, an excellent performance from both receivers. The recovered audio on the Eton is clearer to my ears, but that's qualitative and as usual, I'd be interested in your views. Recorded in Oxford UK on 13/05/17 at 01:51 hrs UTC. Ignore the clock time-difference, there was only a few seconds between recordings. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, very good copy of the signal from Addis Ababa on both receivers. The Sangean should benefit from stronger audio fidelity with the larger speaker and wider filter, but once again it's very close and I'm not sure I have a favourite here.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/05/17 at 18:35 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here's the first comparison of these two portables using an external antenna - 50 metres of wire. This is a relatively weak signal from North Korea and thus a good start for the testing. I think the Eton got this one, but please do let me know your comments. Recorded in Oxford UK on 07/05/17 at 18:11 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, check out this superb signal from Kimjae with the diminutive Sony ICF-SW100 and just 20 or so feet of wire. Although these guys are putting out 250 kW, this still felt like amazing reception on an ultra-compact set-up. Recorded in Oxford UK on 28/0417 at 17:20 hrs UTC using a 6 metre wire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is my first ever reception of the Voice of Korea on the 19 metre broadcast band! Can't quite believe it myself really. Here is a single video constructed from two - the first is the English Service closing down, followed by music from the French Service opening. Recorded in Oxford UK on 05/05/17 at 17:30 hrs UTC using a 30 metre longwire. Thanks for watching
Hi there, my excellent reception of Gander VOLMET on the Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 indoors made me immediately wonder whether I'd be able to hear the signal on a portable. So here they are - the brilliant Sony and Eton demonstrating the signal could be heard via their respective telescopic antennas! I think the Eton pipped the Sony - but I often don't hear what others are hearing! Your comments are most welcome! Recorded in Oxford UK on 28/04/17 ago at 01:26 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching!
Always a compelling listen and more so these days with all the tension on the Korean Peninsula. Once again the Eton does a fine job with a non-resonant piece of wire, this time 30 metres in length.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 31/05/17at 16:38 hrs UTC using an Eton Satellit receiver and 30 metres of wire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, it's been nearly two years since I posted my first ever reception video - Radio Havana Cuba, with the Tecsun PL-360. In that time I've uploaded a lot of videos, made a lot of friends and had a great time with our brilliant hobby. However, it would seem that not everyone is very happy with the activity on this channal and towards the end of the video I show you where they are and how isolated their views are. Thanks for your friendship and support. 73! OSL
Hi there, the final antenna sensitivity test. Similar reception from Saudi Arabia, buti in my opinion, the recovered audio on the Sangean sounds fuller and more pleasant to listen to. Recorded in Oxford UK on 29/04/17 at 14:31 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, another very strong signal from Toronto with the Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop anteanna (indoors). Thanks for watching. Recorded in Oxford UK on 15/01/17 at 05:58 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Great to finally hear a signal from Vostov VOLMET. Rostov is situated north east of Moscow although I wasn't aware of that until I check it out in Google Maps! Recorded in Oxford UK on 26/04/17 at 00:57 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna. Thanks for watching
Hi there, this was the evening I first managed to hear Kuwait - and worth waiting for - the signal on my Elad FDM DUO was huge - strong enough to easily copy them with the modestly priced, but excellent PL-310ET using the whip antenna. Recorded in Oxford UK on 05/05/17 around 20:59 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, my friend and a member of our radio fraternity NSNorfolk was kind enough to offer to build and send me a matching transformer (450 to 50 Ohms) suitable for Beverage antennas in general - and to try on the 450 metre barbed wire fence I use. It actually arrived with a Common Mode Filter which acts to attenuate signals picked up from a coaxial feedline. Very kind of him indeed to do this and I'm very grateful. Here is an explanation as to how they work and how I'm planning to use them. DXpedition coming soon to test them out. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, country music doesn't get much better than Johnny Cash and despite the audio quality associated with most medium wave DX transatlantic signals, this was great to hear. Hope you agree. Recorded in Oxford UK on 15/01/17 at 01:58 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is another quick comparison of the relative sensitivity of the Sangean and Eton on their internal whip antennas, using the AIR signal from Panaji, India. I've watched this over again and now I can't make my mind up although at the time I thought the Eton had just got it - certainly closer than I envisaged - what are your views?! As always, your comments appreciated. Recorded in Oxford UK on 29/04/17 at 14:38 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, most of you will know that 4 months ago I purchased a Bonito Boni Whip and have since then managed to demonstrate how it's a brilliant E-field antenna for DXpeditions - and anywhere quiet, where a compact form-factor is required. There are many reception videos on this channel using the Boni Whip and it's been very nice to hear that some subscribers have noted their intentions to purchase one.
I was so impressed with it that I wrote an article on SWLing Post, including reception videos to essentially prove it's DXing credentials and was subsequently contacted by Dennis Walter of Bonito. Dennis asked if it was ok for him to post my article on the Bonito Newsroom page on their website, which of course I happy to agree to. He also asked whether I'd be interested in receiving other Bonito antennas for testing/ reviewing and sharing the results with our radio fraternity. I gladly agreed to his suggestion and here is the first antenna - the MegActiv MA305.
Whilst similar in specification to the Boni Whip. the MA305 has a slightly wider bandwidth. longer radiating element and rather brilliantly can operate as low as 5V, thus enabling it to be powered via a USB power bank (supplied) for several days! I will be taking the MA305 out on DXpeditions soon and recording reception videos. All will be uploaded to this channel and a report/s uploaded to SWLing Post. In the meantime I wish you all great DX. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here is a quick comparison of the relative sensitivity of the Sangean and Eton on their internal whip antennas, using a deliberately signal from Oman. I reckon the Eton just nicks this one, but it's close; a lot closer than I thought it could be. As always, your comments appreciated. Recorded in Oxford UK on 29/04/17 at 14:51 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is the first decent signal from S30 Rostov for many months. When I do sit in my shack listening to this or The Buzzer, I tend to stare at the screen, watching the carrier and modulation, whilst wondering what on Earth is this all about lol! I wouldn't be surprised if the actual purpose is quite mundane, so perhaps it's better not to know! Recorded on 26/04/17 at 00:36 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is my first home reception of Radio Voz Missionaria on the 49 metre broadcast band since last summer. Great to finally hear them again. Recorded in Oxford UK on 25/04/17 at 01:17 hrs UTC, using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, another signal from North Korea, this time their internal shortwave service. Once again, how brililant to pull a radio out of your pocket and hear this??!! Recorded in Oxford UK on 28/0417 at 17:14 hrs UTC using a 6 metre wire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, how nice to be able to put a radio in your pocket and then listen to the goings on in North Korea, direct from the horses's mouth! That's the beauty of shortwave and no 3G, 4G WiFi required! Long live shortwave! Rant over. Recorded in Oxford UK on 28/0417 at 17:24 hrs UTC using a 6 metre wire. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, my good friend Tom Brogan recommended that I buy this radio because a) it's of very high quality build b) excellent audio and c) he believed I could demonstrate what it's really capable of with the Wellbrook ALA1530 and my various longwire antenna configurations. I'd been putting off buying one because I already have lots of radios and the 909x is pretty expensive - around £250 new in the UK. However, I came across one on eBay recently and managed to bag it for more than £100 below the usual selling price. It had been used once and was (accurately) described as in as-new condition. I've always thought this radio was one of the best examples of industrial design in a shortwave radio ever - it's certainly a nice object to have on the coffee table or in your shack. When Tom recommends a radio, I always listen because he knows his stuff - it was he that suggested I buy the Sony ICF-SW100 and the Tecsun PL-310ET. The rest, as they say, is history and the reception videos proving he was correct are on this channel. Anyway, here are my first impressions of the Sangean. Thanks for watching.
Hi there, this is my first reception of CBNA in 2017. CBC signals are regularly heard at my shack, but more more regularly on their higher frequencies, so their 600 kHz transmission is always a pleasing catch.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 15/01/17 at 01:59hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, CJYQ is one of those transatlantic signals whose carrier is frequently observed on the MW spectrum at my QTH, but only rarely delivering discernible audio. The first time I copied their signal was with the 200 metre Beverage antenna and this is only my second receive since then. Recorded in Oxford UK on 14/01/17 at 02:01 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
Hi there, here's a very clear signal from Romania, but one that keeps dropping out here in Oxford, UK. DRM is a great idea in principle, but with constant drop-outs and audio fidelity, that whilst clear, doesn't sound very natural to my ears - I just keep thinking signal processing lol.Recorded on 23/04/17 at 05:43 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
The third reception videos in this little series and here a huge signal from the transmitter at Moosbrunn, Austria. Recorded in Oxford UK on 23/04/17 at 05:35 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (indoors). Thanks for watching.
